We recently connected with Kayla Perkins and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
All the projects I have worked on have been so meaningful. I treat every project like it’s the first one. There is so much to learn about yourself within the project that makes you grow as an actor. But if I only had one to pick it would have to be The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Growing up I loved doing pageants and one day there just happened to be a casting for The Simple Life, pageant camp. I was so excited when I saw the casting online, so my mom helped me to apply since I was only twelve at the time. The casting lady called and told us she would let me do the interview but because I lived in Kentucky and the show was filmed in California, my chances of getting into it was really slim but I didn’t let that stop me. As I set on the couch waiting to do the interview, I was nervous as I could be not knowing what was going to happen. As I set there with my teacup chihuahua in my pageant gown the interview began. I had so much fun during the interview even with my dog trying to bite my hand off. She asked me questions to do with pageants and what was one thing I needed help with while doing pageants which I said interview with the judges. The next day I got the call back that I got the job. I was so excited and nervous at the same time not knowing what to expect, but here we come California. We spent a week at camp with four other pageant girls, we did tea parties, went shopping, practiced our pageant routines. It was so much fun. The experience we had while working with Paris and Nicole was one of the most meaningful and professional experiences of my life. They were so nice to us and made sure that they gave us an experience that we would never forget. It was meaningful to me because it was the first experience for me to ever do any film work. I took a chance on myself and put myself out there and fell in love with the whole acting experience. I had to do more when I came back to Kentucky. As they as in the business I had caught the bug.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
To get to know a little bit about me I grew up doing pageants. At age twelve I got into The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie. Thats when my life changed, and I found a new art that I love. I came back to Kentucky and started out doing modeling and acting in short Horror films. It was such an experience I will never forget. I got into different acting classes and learned how to become an actor. I have done different movies like Dreamer with Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell, Hell-ephone, Santa Claus Versus the Zombies, The Girl, and Red River. The past couple years I have done awareness films called A Promise to Alexis, Surviving Tragedy to other films like Monster On, The Hayride, The Dark Room and so many more. I love acting! Acting is not just showing up to set and reading the lines, calling it a day. Acting is about being so vulnerable and becoming that character. Acting is like therapy. I am most proud of myself for putting myself out there and growing as an actor. Learning from other actors and learning from sets I have been on of what to do next time or not to do. What sits me apart from others I think is that I am me. We are all different and act different and that is what is key. I am very hardworking and want to be the best actor I can be within myself. Life is not a race, and we are all on our own path, it’s just about learning and growing to be the best actor and person you can be.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the growth within your craft. Putting yourself out there and giving it your all. It is so rewarding to be able to make the life of a character come to life and learn about yourself in the process.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal that is driving my creative journey is to become the best actor I can be. Learn, grow and master my craft. My mission is to be a role model for the younger generation. Be an outlet to help others along my journey.
