We recently connected with Kayla Pendleton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I really loved to draw when I was younger. Particularly, drawing dresses. When I was in middle school I found myself interested in drawing various outfits and creating a “design” name for them. It’s funny now because I can remember the design name for it which was Bunny (with a halo on top of it). I knew I was going to be the next fashion designer, especially because my mum taught me hand sewing and I had support from my friends and family for a dream that was bigger than myself. But reality hit me like a brick when I got to high school and took sewing classes and did some research on the profession of fashion design. Being a fashion designer was not exactly what I wanted to do but being in the fashion industry was. So I took some time and researched the fashion industry. I researched careers in the industry and the details of the profession, schooling, salary, etc. I knew my talents and where my creativity could take me and made my decision as a Wardrobe Stylist.
Kayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For starters my name is Kayla. Some may call me Kay, Kay-kay, coach kay, and Pendleton because I have many hats. However, my primary focus is fashion. I have always been drawn to being creative and more ways than one. I find art is in everything we see and hear.
I began my journey in the fashion industry when I was very young. I had opportunities to work on many platforms such as; fashion shows as a model and stylist, working and interning at boutiques, styling brides, wardrobe styling in theater and films, and so forth. I love to make others feel confident in themselves.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Once you start to not have others project their fears unto what God has for you, you will begin to shine the light that was in you.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I learn it is better to be successful working in your career hands-on. Having an education is useful but you really learn more in the moment of making decisions and thinking on your feet. My educational journey did not prepare me to the extent I needed and a few things I had to learn the hard way.
