We were lucky to catch up with Kayla Murphy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
The biggest trends I am seeing in the social media industry is a push for video content, especially on TikTok and Instagram. You have to look at social media not as a competition with each other, but as competition with each social media platform. Instagram is in competition with TikTok, who’s in competition with YouTube, who’s in competition with Netflix…. it’s all a competition to see who can keep you on their social media platform the longest.
Kayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi everyone. If you’re reading this I hope you’re all doing well.
My name is Kayla Murphy, I’m a 27 year old social media manager and I live in New York City. Originally from a small town in Connecticut, I love to snowboard, explore abandoned places and play with my black kitten named Wednesday.
Earlier this year, I left the corporate world and opened my own social media marketing business called KKB Media LLC. (@kkbmediallc)
Since before the pandemic, I have always enjoyed traveling and blogging my experiences. My personal social media (@kaykayblondiee) has grown to over 190,000 followers on TikTok and over 45,000 followers on Instagram.
I strive to bring authentic and viral results for myself and my clients. I take great pride in my work. I have won several awards as Best Social Media Influencer in Connecticut.
What I’m most passionate about though is helping spread awareness on domestic violence. In 2020, I left a physically violent relationship. After he had almost choked me to death, I realized my life purpose was to use a creative outlet and spread awareness. I created a nonprofit called Stick and Bones Boutique, where I sell spooky clothing and proceeds go to domestic violence shelters in New York, Connecticut and Georgia. I have raised $6,000 for fellow domestic violence survivors.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, I think the best strategy is to be authentic and to find your ideal client. If you’re really interested in cars and music, then find auto repair shops and guitar stores.
If you’re looking to find clients, try searching job postings on Indeed or LinkedIn. If there’s a demand for your role, give that company a good ole fashion phone call expressing your interest and explaining who you are.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I originally went to college for Journalism. After 3 years in the field, I became exhausted and frustrated. The 2 newspapers I worked for were extremely toxic with low pay and low benefits. 4 years of college did not prepare for the harsh reality of how people would be in the actual work force.
I decided to switch my talents to marketing. With a love for photography and writing, I found myself happier creating content than dealing with hard news and obituaries.
It’s never too late to try a new skill or learn a new career path!
