Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kayla Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kayla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
Back in 2015 my mom had just came back from San Antonio. She hands me a spray painted heart and beanie and screams in excitement of the amazing artist she had met. She then ended her story with a,” I think you should try this mija! Your art is amazing and I can see you selling work like this.” Now I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist but I didn’t know what that meant. Later that week I sat down with 7 canvas and began spray painting. Thinking to myself, “wow this is so easy! This feels amazing!” 2015, I was only 17. I posted photos of all of the paintings on facebook, instagram, twitter. Anywhere people could see it. One of my friends asked me if they could take my paintings one day. I said sure why not! To me it wasn’t anything. That’s my friend! Well to my surprise, next time I saw him he’d be handing me a stack of cash. He explained to me how every time he hung out with someone recently he’d show them my art and they’d make an offer. He sold them all. Right then and there I felt for the first time how bittersweet it is in this industry. It was amazing someone appreciated my art so much that they paid for it to see it in their home. But I had to learn to let go and think “it’s in a better place”. All my life I’d make something and just pile them up in a folder, binder, or drawer. Just all tucked away. Although collecting my art for my cave can feel more thrilling at times than selling my work. It felt good to see how many connections I could make in infinite ways. Someone then had seen my work on twitter and invited me out for my first ever showing! This show ended up being in Dallas Tx. My mother, sister and I were then driving out to Dallas for my first show. Only 17 years old, I then felt the drive fuel more. I brought 3 paintings out with me that day. 2 sold and I came back home that day feeling the lift. The bitterness had left and I understood the sweet part of selling artwork.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, my name is Master K, but you all can call me Maze Brain. I’ve been selling my art since 2015. Becoming an artist has always been my dream and to see it become my reality is everything. I specialize in art from within. I like to paint my inner struggles, thoughts, mental problems, and challenges. As life exists, there’s also potential from these moments. So with that I also paint my inner growth, realizations, and appreciation towards this world. I love how my art work can be an amazing icebreaker. Not always do we see a stranger and think, “wow I must release my darkest secrets”. Something about seeing a painting, feeling all of those emotions surface, and feeling connected to the artist because you got that glimpse of their insides makes it all much more approachable. I love getting to hear what they mean to you all. Because that’s what art is all about. The infinite perspectives.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’d have to say the most rewarding part of being a creative is knowing you are infinite. Anything is possible and there isn’t any limit to what a creative can do. Creatives are just infinite thinkers. Because if I can do one thing than I can do anything.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As there are infinite possibilities for creatives. There are also infinite ways society likes to push down some creatives. I got a little taste of it unfortunately so now currently unlearning and remembering to fuel myself from within. Because in a world full of opinions only mine matters to me when it comes to my art.
