We recently connected with Kayla Loreth and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
Word of mouth is so incredibly important in my industry. Social media and marketing can only do so much but if your repeat client refers you to her friend and they recommend you to another, it becomes quite the snowball effect.
I work hard to make sure my clients receive the best of the best service, experience and products, so hearing about them referring me to others is such an amazing feeling!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a full time photographer for about 7 years now. I never thought I’d be one to take on a career in a creative field but I absolutely love what I do.
I am a full service photographer, providing keepsake portraits to families, couples, soon to be parents and everything in between, in San Diego California. I love to incorporate emotive, loving, candid moments into my sessions and will definitely not hold back dad jokes and fart noises to get children (and adults) to laugh. I live for the twirly dresses and nose kisses, for the piggy back rides and splashing in the ocean!
Have you ever had to pivot?
The pandemic has definitely caused me to do a complete 180 in how I do things now. I was unable to work for the majority of the first year, so I focused on creating difference avenues in my business, starting with providing beautiful wall art and products for my past (and now current and future) clients. Giving them the option to shop directly through their online galleries, choosing beautiful pieces that they can adorn their homes with, and being able to help them plan out products based on their home esthetic was so much fun for me and is something I will continue to do from here on out!

Being consistent, posting regularly/semi regularly, using relevant hashtags and tagging people and locations. It’s all trial and error for the most part, especially with algorithms changing constantly. Mainly, be true to yourself. Don’t get lost in trying to paint a picture perfect feed. Show your face, tell a story, let your audience get to know the real you.
