We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kayla Lofaro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kayla below.
Kayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The biggest risk I have taken is opening discotheque! It was the height of the pandemic. Salons were not even allowed to be open and the salon that I was working out had closed and I figured “is this my time?” my dream has always been to be a salon owner. I wasn’t ready mentally or financially but I figured, am I ever going to be? I just jumped in, and I am so glad I did. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.
Kayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I opened up Discotheque because I wanted to make a safe space for all walks of life. It’s a very progressive, small and warm salon. I love the energy that flows in a hair salon. I used to beg my mom to go with her when I was a kid! So I created a place where artists could hang up their art, people can feel open and comfortable no matter what. The energy there is very special and unique and you really won’t know until you’re there.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I moved to Los Angeles from New Jersey about 10 years ago. It’s really difficult as a hairstylist to start a brand new clientele from the ground up. I definitely stressed out about rent and didn’t think I could do it multiple times. I contemplated and even plan to move back. But luckily, with the support system surrounding me, I decided to stay. You really truly need to outsource to the people around you especially when you’re feeling defeated. I’m so glad my family and friends supported me staying because it truly molded me into who I am today.
How did you build your audience on social media?
social media is an entire different planet, but very very important for small business owners. It’s crucial and you learn that as you go. I had a TikTok made about my salon, and it went viral and I am still getting clients from that one TikTok. It opened my eyes to this whole new world of social media, and how vital it is. It’s an extension of your job and it’s definitely not easy.
