We recently connected with Kayla Life and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The Rebrand Creative Agency is a full service digital branding and marketing agency focused on putting business owners at the center of their story. We are redefining “rebranding” by providing strategic research based and data driven designs curated uniquely for each client. Through the power of technology, education and social emotional techniques, we are the answer to a fresh start. Rebrand Land®, home of the Main Character.
As a neurodivergent and black woman, my talents and confidence became a threat to others. I found that often at times, I was confined to a box, created for and by others for the comfort of themselves and the downfall of myself. I created The Rebrand Creative Agency aka Rebrand Land, as a space where I can let all of my talents shine cohesively while creating spaces for other women to shine as the MAIN character of their story. Rebranding excites me because its not changing who you are yet, unlocking the hidden potential that’s always been there. Rebranding is transitioning into the person you’ve always meant to be, the definition of having a growth mindset.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have a Bachelor’s degree from Spelman College in Education Studies, a Masters degree in School Counseling from Alfred University and certifications in mental health counseling and software engineering. I have served over 10 years in the education system in various roles including Technology Teacher, School Leader, Program and Curriculum Developer, School Counselor and DEI Lead. I currently serve as the CEO of the Rebrand Creative Agency, a digital branding agency focused on marketing, research and program development. Rebrand Land has provided branding and marketing services, app development, and curriculum development for over 50 small businesses and nonprofits across the US. I am strong in relationship building and connecting with the youth in ways many others struggle too. Before leaving education to start my agency, she developed a fully comprehensive Technology curriculum for 5-8 grade students in Brooklyn NY for 8 public charter schools. She currently consults with teachers seeking to implement technology in their classrooms while building healthy relationships with their school community. My other notable business is KKSQ Tech Creative Corporation designed to be a serious resource for serial entrepreneurs, where I serve as board chairman.

Have you ever had to pivot?
This is a great question, and totally on brand! Rebrand Land was birth from the concept that we are consistently in transition because we are in a constant state of growth. Before full time entrepreneurship, I held many titles under the umbrella of education. I had my first job at the age of 12 on payroll at my little sisters daycare and that started my pathway in my passion for children. My late position before transitioning into CEO was working at a charter school in New York, where I spent 6 years developing several programs for my kids to thrive and be successful, my most notable being the technology program and the girls basketball team amongst others. My colleagues would consistently express how impactful I was to their teaching career as I led professional developments, Diversity and Inclusion conversations, and 1v1 coaching while my kids and their families surrounded me with love and appreciate while simultaneously questioning when I was leaving the school. Throughout my time there, statements like “You’re truly a hidden gem” and “you’re bigger than this space” all made mention by my school community, rang in my ears, yet I ignored it. Because I knew no other job outside of education, and yes I was talented and yes my skill set spoke for itself, but what possible options did I have? My passion was my kids and making their eyes light up when I exposed them to something new, or watch them accomplish something they never thought they could. I boxed myself in, even though everyone around me say so much more. When the pandemic hit, and we were all forced into the virtual space, I was amongst the few that elevated and took full advantage of the time inside. I started my first business Kandor Expressions, a t shirt printing company with my own designs on them. That quickly expanded to digital branding and marketing and others seeking advice on their own businesses. Keep in mind, I was still a teacher, and my role shifted from teaching tech to training teachers in my school community and across the network on how to effectively use and implement technology in their content areas without decreasing rigor and increasing engagement. While I was happy to meet the need, I was not being compensated for “saving schools during the pandemic” With almost 15 years in field of education, I was presented with a crossroads. I realized that my passion was not my calling and in order to truly be of service and change, I had to expand my reach. I retired and transformed into what I now refer as an educator beyond walls. My calling is to create spaces for others to see their power and thrive, my passion is for humanity to just be comfortable in human experience, and this was the birth of Rebrand Land.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Before I really understood what I was doing on social media, I was posting a series called #kaydayadvice where I would give just basic life advice on my instagram and youtube with my personal brand KayKandorSquared, for twice the expression and double the honesty. I found that others looked forward to seeing the weekly tips and my audience quickly grew, as a transitioned into #heyrealquick to keep on trend with short form content but also remind myself of the greatness within me as I constantly rewatch my own content lol! People resonated with #heyrealquick the same they did #kaydayadvice and now, I use my own story to keep inspiring others! My best advice to anyone looking to build a social presence is remember, first and foremost, SOCIAL MEDIA IS FAKE! It is not a depiction or reflection of how amazing or successful you are, it a platform for community. I you want to attract the right community, be relatable, stand out and just be yourself!
