Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kayla Lawrence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kayla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mother raised me as a teenage parent with the help of my grandmother. I often refer to them both as “my parents”. My parents provided me with every opportunity possible with the limited resources they had. My mother struggled financially throughout my childhood. She sacrificed often to provide for me. She never complained and always persevered. Many of those qualities she learned from my grandmother who was also a teenage parent. I wouldn’t be the woman and business owner I am today without them. My success has been a direct result of their continuous support and prayers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always had a heart for people. As I began to grow professionally and personally, I developed a passion to work more specifically with women. Once I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I knew I wanted to own a private practice that focused primarily on women’s health. I know firsthand the challenges women face daily and the pressure we feel to be perfect. Society has taught women that taking time for yourself is selfish and unnecessary. I’m proud to own a private practice that focuses on the mental and emotional health of women. At Triumph Counseling Group, PLLC®, our mission is to empower women to live courageously and with purpose. Our services include virtual counseling services, clinical social work supervision and professional speaking services. We aspire to help women reach their full potential by providing community mental health awareness and education. We firmly believe change happens with increased self-awareness and mindfulness.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2018 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer while in the middle of a divorce. This was by far the scariest experience of my life. There were times I not only questioned my worth as a woman, but my purpose. I felt completely lost. I didn’t realize it at the time, but God had a plan. Getting through that experience was tough. There were times I wanted to quit, but deep down I knew there was purpose in my pain. I had surgery to remove my thyroid and I’m now cancer free. My heart healed from divorce and I met the love of my life. I began to love myself and value my self-worth more than ever before. It didn’t happen overnight, and it required a significant amount of work. During this period of my life, I truly began to understand the definition of resilience. I choose to share my story to encourage women around the world. My hope is that through my story, women will have the courage to live fearlessly and with purpose.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started my private practice in 2019, I wanted to help everyone. My practice didn’t have a clear direction and I quickly found myself overwhelmed and burned-out. I knew for my practice to succeed, I had to make a pivot. I began to realize I wasn’t fully operating in my purpose. I realized the gift I had to serve and support women. Once I made the shift, everything changed for me both professionally and personally.
