We were lucky to catch up with Kayla Gutierrez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I threw myself into YouTube, watching other creatives share their tips and stories of how they got started, it really motivated me and helped me with my journey.
Knowing what I know now I would’ve definitely been more easier on myself with my work and my creative process, I feel like I was too hard on myself especially with this work can be very time-consuming and draining, which stopped me from being open to trying out different avenues of creativity. The most essential skills I believe having is organization and consistency. My most challenging fear was other people’s opinions and not putting out quality content. I’m a very private person so recording myself and taking pictures of myself was very uncomfortable at first until I got more relaxed. I always say “You got to get comfortable with being uncomfortable” so once I got over that it was easier to evolve in my work and be confidently me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kayla Gutierrez, I’m a born and raised Cali native, I’m 29 years young, a Taurus, aesthetic junkie, and I have been blessed with this amazing opportunity by the grace of the most high, to create content that expresses my own unique eye and creativity. It came about in the most unexpected way, I remember mindlessly scrolling through instagram when I came across a creators reel talking about the break down of what all goes into being a content creator and how fun it was and I thought to myself “ I can do this” and I could, I am. I started googling all the types of platforms and brand opportunities that could potentially get me collaborations and deals. I also focused on really building my instagram up as a resume to showcase that I am capable of providing the creative service they’re looking for. I provide creative services from UGC to content creation on my many platforms, providing access to a community that aligns with a brand’s target audience as well as establishing credibility. From an array of social media posts to images, videos, product reviews, testimonials, or podcasts. The biggest problem that I solve for a majority of my clients is freeing up time for business owners to focus on other areas. Solving those problems can look like offering consistent strategies or creating methods that suit with business needs of managing social media. At the moment, I’m most proud of the range of work that I’ve had the opportunity to experience. To say the least I am passionate about continuing to grow in my creative mindset as well as my craft and remaining adaptable to understanding the target audience and trends.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is definitely tapping into my gifts that God has blessed me with. My creative expression, to be able to express my unique perspective and showcase my creativity. This creative work is for all to see and impact, as well as influence the lives of my audience. I have the ability to inspire change, deliver information, and form opinions in a way that resonates with people. I have the power to tell my story and share my ideas with the world.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think that the biggest misunderstanding about this journey of work is the legitimacy of it being “ a real job” because of it not being a conventional career, this unfortunately is a common sentiment. The amount of creativity, thought process, rejections, consistency, and deep research that goes into this skill line of work is a great deal. And it’s not solely about producing work, though you may not understand it or have an eye for these creative outlets, it does not take away from the fact that it can be a fulfilling and rewarding career for many including myself. I hope that shedding some light on these aspects of the creative journey to those reading can bring about an appreciation and understanding to the creative path. And for those that are interested in the idea that maybe you too can tap into your artistic expression with content creation, anything is possible, you just have to have the courage and inspiration to try.
