We were lucky to catch up with Kayla Guanzon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kayla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
From the start creating a brand and working for myself was the goal. It is no secret that the distribution of women-owned companies is unbalanced when compared to male-owned. As a woman, I look up to other women in business including Karen Lynch CEO of CVS, Judy Faulkner, founder and CEO of Epic Systems, an electronic health record used across the US, and of course, Oprah Winfrey, entrepreneur who created a media empire. These women inspired me to start my own business and help close the gender gap in companies. To get started I did a little bit of research and set up my LLC. I have no background in business which proved to be challenging at times. Being self-taught, I have made some mistakes but have learned as I go. If I could do it all over again, I would have taken a business or finance class to gain more knowledge of best practices. Once you have your LLC, bank accounts, insurance, and anything else you need to get started, it’s time to create your brand and market yourself. This is one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship and what will set your company apart from its competitors. For me, I wanted my brand RBF (Really Beautiful Faces) to help women feel empowered, improve self-confidence, and destroy preconceived notions and stereotypes that women face on a day-to-day basis. I feel that many individuals can relate to my story and struggles and that’s why they choose to support my company.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Nurse Practitioner, I have always been interested in the sciences and decided to pursue a career in healthcare. While I like science and medicine, I also love expressing myself through art. I discovered that aesthetics was the perfect field for me. There is order and structure, yet it takes a certain eye to help enhance and build one’s desired facial features. Having hundreds of competitors, what sets RBF apart from the rest is the ability for others to relate. I am just an average looking female who wants to feel good in their own skin. I have been told on multiple occasions that I look unapproachable or mean when in fact I am neither! After being told time and time again that I have RBF or that I should “fix my face” I decided to turn these negative comments into something positive. I opened Really Beautiful Faces (RBF), a medical spa specializing in anti-aging and aesthetic services to help all individuals feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. The field of aesthetics can be ruthless, I am proud that I have stayed true to myself and always take the highroad, especially when competitors in the field try and tear you down. I believe that my authenticity is apparent to my patients and that keeps them coming back!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media has been our number one strategy for gaining new clients. Having a consistent presence, sharing relatable content, and making content that will appeal to your target audience is imperative. Advertising yourself or business on social media is FREE! Capitalize on this. However, if social media isn’t your thing, then you will need to hire someone.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
To be a good manager or leader you must consider the impact of your decisions for your staff. For example, if there is inclement weather and I would not be comfortable driving in it, I would not expect my staff to and therefore would close the office. Appropriately compensate your employees. Happy well compensated employees are less likely to leave, minimizing employee turnover allows the business to spend less on training over time. Lastly, your employees are adults, treat them as such. When your staff feels respected they perform better and are less likely to push boundaries that can result in poor business outcomes.
