We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Daily a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I actually did have that job. I was a public elementary school teacher for 10 years. I started my business and was DJing with teaching. I would get out of school around 3:30 and be at a DJing job around 5:30 until 9-10PM and then do it all over again the next day. After Covid, I was exhausted from teaching. I wasn’t happy and wasn’t healthy. I finally took the leap and jump out into the sole businesses owner life and I’ve never been happier. It’s a lot of work. Whatever you put into it, you directly reap the benefits from; the good and bad. But I absolutely love it and could never go back to a 9-5 job.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started out as just a music lover. I was in a band and loved creating. I was doing side work for a local business and jumped into DJing a few weddings for them. Just as fun. Which turned into me falling in love with couples, their story and creating a space for them to create their own core memories. I always saw it as a fun side hustle until I started to become miserable with my teaching job. I slowly wanted to put more time into creating mixes, media and organizing crates of music for weddings. And I did. I was counting down the hours to when I could go home from teaching. I was beyond miserable. Thankfully I have a very supportive husband and took a leap of faith. I had many supporters and many doubters. I haven’t looked back. I began pouring everything I had into my business. Standing out as a women owned business and wanting to crate genuine connections with other people through music.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
We are a team of three women DJ’s in an overly saturated man’s world of DJing. We kind of have to stick together. We have a group chat that we consistently message each other in. Being super open and honest with each other. If we had a bad experience, we talk about it and how we could have made the situation better. If we had a stellar event, we praise each other like we just won the lottery. We re always breaking down our day and reflecting. Although I give advice, I take it too. Just because I am the owner doesn’t mean I can’t learn from my girls. We are definitely like a family. We check in throughout events and even let each other know when we have made it home. I feel like I took the time to train them exactly how I would go out and DJ an event. I’m always there but I give them the creative liberty to work with their clients how they see fit. Each person is different. And we all work in different ways.
