We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kayla Broberg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kayla below.
Kayla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
As much as I value being a creative it can be very difficult getting creative projects funded, even if you are part of an institution. Working for a gallery, one of my roles is to write grant applications, which usually requires coordination between local city officials, galleries, and artists. The arts are generally underfunded which leads to intense competition and a high barrier to success. Even with these barriers, I believe it is still important to showcase the impact artists have on our communities. Every request is an opportunity to make connections with new voices and perseverance definitely pays off.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been creative. When I was young, I would spend time drawing, collaging, and acting. As I got older and explored creative options I found myself further drawn to art and design. My interest and insight into people drives me to create with a purpose. As a designer, my goal with every project is to make something timeless, beautiful, and thought provoking. As an artist, my goal is self expression and self exploration; it is a way for me to better understand myself and others. As a coordinator, my goal is to connect and engage with artists from all walks of life. I am proud to be part of an organization that enables artists from across the globe to connect and create narratives that explore political issues and social movements which impact different regions of the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a creative allows me the opportunity to better understand myself and others. For me, it has always been a way of exploring different perspectives. I am very interested in the individual and collective experiences of people and find that art is an effective way of sharing those perspectives. I find that art can have a profound effect on communities, as well as social and political conversations.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am proud to be part of an organization who’s mission is dedicated to cultivating cultural understanding through the arts. The organization was launched to engage communities of different ethnic and financial backgrounds in a socio-political exploration through the lens of contemporary art, through our programs. Years later, the organization continues to build and sustain relationships with Ministries of Culture, museums, and other cultural institutions, giving artists all over the world the opportunity to openly explore and influence social and political issues in today’s world. I believe that the arts is an effective way of building community and furthering understanding of ourselves and others.
