We were lucky to catch up with Kaydelis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaydelis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In awe of the inspiring musical projects and artists that have inspired us our whole life, we’ve always wanted to be able to emulate one key thing about their music. We want our music meaningful and thought provoking, intricate and explorative, while maintaining the appeal of infectious and catchy writing. This has led us down a path of almost overthinking our projects, as every endeavor we take is carefully plotted to have some level of meaningfulness that isn’t so obvious on the surface. We want our listeners to read between the lines, and figure out for themselves what the music means, even if it isn’t the original or intended meaning. For example, our current project, “The World’s Greatest Racer Driver” is an album about what it means for us as artists to develop into our own, while paying homage to the acts before us. In a lot of ways, the term “World’s Greatest Racer Driver” is a codeword for ourselves, taking an internal look at our band and how we’ve come to be, but that isn’t so obvious upon first listen of the album.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We, or Kaydelis, are a psychedelic indie pop group from the Atlanta area. Playing for about 5 years, this project originally started in a high school biology class, and has not stopped progressing since. We strive to make enjoyable, yet though provoking music that gives our outlook on the world and the situations we find ourselves in as humans. Above this, however, is the driving need we feel to connect people through the world of music. Whether it be our live performances that bring people together for nights of euphoria, or just two friends sharing a piece of our music, our main goal is to form connections and enhance the human experience for our fans.
While this is a huge goal, and an even bigger one to do through music, we have found ourselves growing year over year, and growing closer with our followers. We are proud to say that every Kaydelis follower, supporter, or friend is just as important as the members themselves, and we will always strive to strengthen that bond.
We also run a small commercial studio in Woodstock, Georgia, that is dedicated to making music affordable and quality for smaller artists. We want to shatter any barrier to entry that music has due to the rising cost of creation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, above all things, is the excitement of people who love our music being expressed to us. This has presented itself at our shows, where the lyrics are routinely being shouted back at us, as if the performance was from the audience themselves, as well as in everyday life. There is no better feeling than a supporter telling you about their personal connection with your work, or how much this line from this song meant to them. The reward doesn’t come from tangible success or financial takeoff, it comes from the people whose lives you impact with your art.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing that society can do to support artists, creatives, and art itself is to remember why we are drawn to it in the first place. Humans, at their core, have always been connected to the arts in an almost unexplainable way, and maintaining this love story with creativity and expression is critical to the ecosystem of the creative world. By remembering and divulging into our love of art, w can re-prioritize that desire, which directly improves the life of artists. We are responsible for sharing the art we love with our friends and family, therefore stabilizing the sustainability of creating art, resulting in more art for us to enjoy.
