We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kayce Laine. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kayce below.
Kayce, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
There have been three big risks I’ve taken that have altered the course of my life. The first was when I left home to move to New York City to pursue my career in music. At 22, a few months after graduating from the University of Virginia, I auditioned to be the synth and vocalist of an indie-electro pop band based in Brooklyn and after receiving the gig, packed up my belongings and moved there! It was definitely a big risk, even though I did have a sister and brother-in-law living there at the time to help show me the ropes. I ended up staying there for the next 5 years playing music in various bands, creating a solo project and teaching private music lessons.
The next big risk I took was similar but with a twist: While living in Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to go to Nashville for a record and I connected with a producer and engineer Tim Brennan. He and I ended up making a record together a few months later and fell in love. Despite only knowing each other for a couple of months, I decided that I needed to be with him so I packed my things once again and relocated to Nashville to be with him. I know some of the people around me must’ve thought I was crazy, but I knew he was the one for me, and 7 years later, we are still together, making and writing music together (our debut album “Wake Up Dreamer” is out October 28, 2022) and living in Nashville.
The final big life-changing risk I took was in March of 2021 when I left my corporate job in Public Relations to pursue my business as an energy healer. I had spent 5 years working for a company with a very comfortable, steady income and I left it all to focus on my business that I had slowly started a couple years prior. I never lost the faith that I could pull it off, and 1.5 years later, it’s still working! I’m staying busy with public and private sound healing sessions, trainings, and selling sound healing instruments – doing things I love every day, and I have SO much gratitude for that!!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My first love is and always will be music. I began singing and playing piano with my dad who is a professional musician at a young age and continued to perform from then on. I got a bit of a late start with writing music (I didn’t write my first song until I was a senior in college), but quickly found that process to be incredibly therapeutic and healing. Once I had my first day job in my late 20s, I experienced writer’s block on a pretty deep level and had no idea how much of an impact not writing would have on my mental health! During this time, I was also not performing which compounded the issues.
I’ve always been a yogi and somewhat of a spiritual being, and this low point for me really pushed me to explore new avenues of meditation. Ultimately this resulted in me getting more and more interested in vibrational healing modalities: specifically crystal and sound therapy. Once I started studying these wellness tools, I ended up taking up formal studies over a few years with Hibiscus Moon Crystal Academy and then with The International Sound Healing Academy. The work I do now serves all types of people: whether you just need a little stress relief or if you are deep on a self-healing journey and need more guidance and clarity on things. I have also made a big focus of my work to help other musicians with the same problems I’ve suffered from: specifically creative block and performance anxiety. I’ve facilitated sound baths and healing sessions at music venues, music studios and songwriting retreats and get so much fulfillment from those experiences!
As an extension of the work I do with individuals and groups, I also serve as an Associate Teacher for the Sound Healing Academy now and teach workshops both in Nashville and in my hometown on the East coast of Virginia to help train others to become sound healers.
Through all of this, however, I still have not stopped playing and making music! I perform every so often in Nashville and in Virginia and am finally releasing my first full-length record, “Wake Up, Dreamer” on October 28, 2022. This record means so much to me and I’m so excited to finally have it out into the world!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely! As I’ve described, my journey as a musician led me straight to my path to become a sound practitioner and energy healer because of the creative block and performance anxiety I was experiencing. Once I experienced the value in sound and crystal healing, I realized I should offer these services to other musicians suffering from the same things! I definitely believe my path was meant to be, so I hate to say I wish I could change something about it, but it definitely would’ve been helpful if I had known how to connect with my breath and body and tap into my creativity in healthy ways when I was in my 20s!!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
During the time that I was starting to get really interested in sound healing, I went to a local sound bath and spoke with the facilitator afterwards. I asked them to share more about their journey and asked for advice on how to get started (any book recommendations etc) since I was interested in possibly becoming a sound healer myself. The facilitator told me not to get into sound healing – essentially they told me to stay in my lane, and focus my energy on crystals and crystal healing. This advice really got in my head, but I thought there was some validity to the way they explained it to me: “Become the crystal expert and I’ll be the sound expert in town.” Unfortunately, I ended up taking their words to heart and didn’t end up exploring sound healing for a while after that, worried that there wasn’t enough demand to go around. A few months later I went back to a sound bath with the same facilitator and this time, they were incorporating crystals into their practice and selling them – They hadn’t taken their own advice, so why was I?!
Obviously, I ended up going through the certification process over the next year and a half, and have ultimately been able to have a thriving business because of it. The lesson that there is enough to go around has really stuck with me though, especially now that I am teaching people to become sound healers myself! It’s a great lesson in trust and I am grateful for it: Whether you’re offering a service, or creating art, your audience and clients will always find you!
