Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kay Vick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
We all want to be affirmed in the choices we make, especially when it comes to our businesses and the support we receive from our friends and family.
I am here to say, while their support is desired, it is NOT required. As long as you believe in your vision, the only concern you should have is doing what you must to bring that vision to life. The support will come and don’t be surprised if it’s from strangers.
Most times family and friends need to be “influenced” in order to support your business. They know you personally, so most times they want to see how “serious” you are, so be consistent in your approach and their support will come.
Now, for those friends and family members that are supportive but always want a “discount”- you have to set the appropriate boundaries to ensure you are being paid for what you’re worth, family or not.
If they really supported you, they would pay full price.
I have learned to not get so caught up in whether or not my friends and family support my business, but focus on those who do.
That keeps me going.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
If I wanted to win, I knew I needed to be willing to unlearn everything that I thought I already knew.
When I first started my business, my only purpose was to generate more income. I later discovered that I needed more than just money to be fulfilled within my business.
I yearned for something that came naturally to me, something that I was knowledgeable and passionate about all the while, allowing me to generate more income., outside of my 9-5.
I would launch products and services that served temporary purposes. For example, I offered resume services because I was really great at keyword research and resume building, but I knew that revamping resumes was just another “thing” that left me unfulfilled, but to generate more income- I would promote those services.
I tried to take shortcuts; I wasn’t doing the work. I wanted to market my services/products without an end goal–other than putting more money in my pocket.
I discovered that it is your story that sells. The work that you put in and the lessons that you learn while on your journey are the key ingredients to being fulfilled.
I started to read more books in my area of interest, signed up for free webinars, and participated in events where I was able to meet like-minded people. I started doing the work and I am still doing the work.
Once I started doing the work, I figured out my WHY. Now that I have my WHY, my HOW will come and so will more money.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Email Marketing. People sleep on email marketing and the integrated tools that are featured on hosting websites. Keeping a list of clients will help foster brand loyalty. Sending out surveys will help you better understand your audience and provide a great opportunity for improvement within the business model.
