We were lucky to catch up with Kay So recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Emit’s Farm and Adventure Park.
Emit is spelled backward for TIME, because time is precious.
It took me losing my dad in an accident, to realized how precious time is. I create events for the public as a gift to them. Creating moments for them to spend their time with their loved ones. Cause you never know if that might be the last time they get to spend time with each other.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was homeless, working 4 jobs, and living in a basement – I adopted a one eyed dog. Then i rescued a pig that couldn’t have babies. I know how it feels to not be loved because you’re not ” perfect. ” One thing after another, i have friends that asked me if they can come over to my place to visit my animals. Some day they have a bad day, they just want to cuddle with my pets.
So i had an idea where i should start bringing my pets to places like birthday parties and stuff, to make money to help feed them. On weekdays ( non event days ) i would bring my animals to low income schools and nursing homes for FREE. I don’t want ” budget ” to be the reason why a kid ( from broken homes ) or a resident who is slowly dying everyday… to not get a chance to find ” joy ” in their life time.
Proceeds from paid events allow us to rescue more animals and give back to the community. It’s really is a great career to be honest. It’s a win win for everyone.
Most of my animals are rescued. It’s rare we get any abused ones. They get rehome to us: allergies, some kids are autistic ( they don’t like animals with noise ), children neglect them and parents don’t want to take on the responsibilities.
Animal control/shelters reach out to us all the time to take in house pets so they can have room for cats and dogs.
We also tame the animals, give them love. Take them out to events – and it’s a good way to showcase animals and who’s available for adoption.
How would you know if you like an animal or not? If you haven’t seen it and interact with it right?
We also offer variety of job opportunities for teenagers and adults.
We train them to do face painting, balloon twist, working on the farm, etc.
My goal is to help kids be kids again. Help get rid of anxiety, help kids get out of the house and work on their depression, get kids to interact with other kids, lower screen time. Just like back in the good old days.
We always say, ” there’s no time to have anxiety on the farm when a pig is loose. ” haha
Have you ever had to pivot?
I start out trying to run a mobile petting zoo, but I got cyber bully REALLY bad from other competitors and rescues/sanctuaries.
They spread lies about me killing animals and spread my name in red. That’s not who I am. So i decided to remove myself from that ” category ” and turn my company into a ONE STOP SHOP FOR EVENTS.
We offer mobile petting zoo, face painting, balloon twist, bounce house, craft sessions, etc ( every season we add something new! )
But honestly, I had them to thank for because now we are #1. We service in 4 different states and we see a minimum of 1000 people PER WEEK. Some days we do 6 events at a time. I have crews and over 200 pets. I wouldn’t be where I’m at now if it wasn’t for them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I like to keep it real. I would post funny memes and stories of what I experienced from events. Everybody is already fighting with their own battles…. it couldn’t hurt to make someone’s day by one funny post. We’re not even on Google and we have a huge follower. We attract real clients, and rarely get negative Nancy kind of clients.
We focus on making our clients feel like we are their friends/family – rather than just business. We have moms sending us funny memes or sharing stories about their kids in our inbox on the daily. I’m referred to as the ” COOL Asian Aunt ” to their kids.
