We were lucky to catch up with Kay Sibson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kay, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I knew starting my own business would be challenging, and I anticipated the need for personal growth. However, I didn’t realize the extent of the inner work required to reach where I am today. I had to unlearn more than I had to learn new things. The hardest part wasn’t the business side; it was becoming the person I needed and wanted to be.
I’ve always loved personal development, but starting a business solo, as opposed to the one I had with a partner, was a night-and-day difference. One of my biggest challenges was learning that my worth didn’t come from my output or productivity. I’ve always been a hard worker; it was how I was raised and what was modeled for me. There’s no shame in hard work, and often, we have to do things we don’t want to do in business and life. However, growing up, my worth was measured by my output and how busy I was, even to the point of exhaustion and burnout.
My instincts to follow what sparked my interest, my intuition, the instinct to rest or slow down, to work in tandem with my energy, and my connection to my body went out the window early on. I was conditioned to prioritize everything and everyone else first, and rest (unless I was ill) was deemed lazy or unearned unless all the work was done. But guess what? The work is never done.
When I quit my job to build my own business and create my own schedule, I initially went hard. I hit the ground running and operated like I used to in my office job. I got a lot done, but looking back, there were constant signs that I needed a different approach. They were subtle, like having to redo things after pushing myself to complete them because I missed a step or learned a better way to set something up, or how I got very sick three weeks after leaving my office job and wasn’t making any progress in my business.
My soul (and body) needed me to slow down, to learn more about who I am, what my strengths are, and what I truly want on a deeper level. That takes time! It was a process, and as a conscious entrepreneur, my learning, healing, and growth are never done. But I learned to be more intentional in executing my plans while reconnecting with my body and intuition. This meant learning about my Human Design (I’m a 3/5 Projector—no wonder my body rebelled when I pushed too hard!), diving into my Kolbe score, finding physical movement that supported me better like dance, yoga, and walks in nature, BodyIntuitive therapy sessions, and really taking time to just BE.
It was a significant challenge to learn to let myself be alone, still, and get to know my own energy and who I am when all the noise is gone. Once I became more comfortable and clear on who I am and what I want, I found more clarity about my real mission, who I am here to help, and HOW. My business model and services have changed significantly since starting, and as I grow and continue to become the best version of myself, they will keep evolving. But right now, I know I am in alignment, and I am so excited for this season to keep unfolding.
Now, my work is about quality over quantity. I mark out creative time in my days for myself and my business, set clear scheduling boundaries, and have routines that work best for me. These routines include plenty of time for meditation and self-check-ins to address my needs both inwardly and in my business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ll be honest, I’m in a season right now of building resilience, self-trust, faith in the Universe, and a ton of patience. I started my business over a year ago, but this current version is only a few months old, and I’m in a bit of a gap and transformation. In the past year, while unlearning, healing, and reestablishing my personal foundations, I’ve had to clear away so much to gain clarity on my bigger mission and “why” for my work. It took until last month for me to really understand how all the pieces of me and the events leading up to my moment of clarity all make sense and click into place. Now, I understand what it’s all for and how I am meant to proceed, but I don’t know where it’s all going. Even though I know the next couple of steps, right now I’m forced to be in a “pause” and really just work on myself to become the next-level version of myself.
Ironically, but clearly intentionally, this is what I help my clients do. Right now, I’m being asked to elevate myself, and it’s taking my business a moment to catch up. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of moving pieces happening right now, and I’m grateful for what I am doing to help people, but I haven’t yet reached my current goals. The biggest challenge is holding onto the vision and inner knowing I have, even though I don’t yet have any outward validations. I have to keep showing up anyway. I have to maintain my course—my truth—and keep some blinders on while I dive into the work I need to do. I trust that the timing will work out and have faith that whatever is meant for me won’t pass me by, and those I’m meant to help navigate the unknowns of their businesses will find me.
We get sold overnight successes every day, but not enough people show the journey to that moment and the personal work they have to do to receive that level of success. If they are unaware of the work they did or didn’t do to gain that “fast” success, they have a lot of work to do to maintain it and ensure their foundations can hold the rapid growth increase.
So, how I’m leading myself through this season of resilience is by showing up for myself, regulating my nervous system, and being intentional about what I am doing, what I need to let go of, where I still need to heal, and making room for the new aspects of what’s needed of me. For me, this looks like daily meditation, connecting to and taking care of my body, and healing my inner child. It’s also about being clear and focusing on tasks that move the needle in my business, not just busy work—real things that make a difference, like the work I currently have with clients, creating authentic content, networking, guesting on podcasts, etc.
A lot of what I had built needed to burn away, much like a phoenix, and right now, I’m collecting the ashes. The outward rebuilding isn’t quite here yet. I need to stay focused on myself, and soon I will know when to take the next step and rise again.
Entrepreneurship growth is about expanding our capacity for discomfort alongside expanding our capacity for abundance in all forms, so that’s my focus right now.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Understanding Human Design and the Kolbe Index has profoundly shaped my approach to business and management. Human Design has helped me recognize my strengths and how to align my energy with my work as a 3/5 Projector, emphasizing the importance of invitation and recognition in my interactions. The Kolbe Index revealed my natural problem-solving instincts, allowing me to leverage my strategic planning abilities effectively.
Additionally, oracle and tarot cards have been invaluable tools in helping me look at situations from different perspectives, offering insights that enable me to see things more clearly and make more informed decisions.
Several resources have significantly impacted my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. The Powerhouse Women Podcast provides general entrepreneurial inspiration and encouragement, while Colleen Nichols’ “Don’t Make It Weird” offers a refreshing perspective on marketing mindset. The concept of gentle marketing has been instrumental in helping me create my own marketing strategies that feel authentic and aligned. Additionally, Dr. Joe Dispenza’s “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself” has greatly shifted my mindset and approach to how I operate in general.
Moreover, reading fictional books I enjoy allows me to learn from and reflect on my business in abstract ways, providing unique insights and inspiration.
These insights and resources have influenced my business model to be more personalized and intuitive, focusing on creating strategies that align with my clients’ unique strengths and needs. They’ve also taught me the value of working in harmony with my energy, ensuring sustainable success and fulfillment in both my personal and professional life.
