Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kay Melodies. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’d have to say the one I’m currently working on. I’m so comfortable with my voice and myself overall now. I’ve realized that as an independent artist I need to take full advantage of having freedom of expression and not having to have boundaries on my creativity. Real expression is what moves people anyway.

Kay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Kay Melodies; a singer, songwriter, poet, martial artist, a student of life, and overall creative. I grew up being an introvert and creative…a very quiet and to myself kind of kid. My best friends were my voice and my pen. I’d say I began my journey as an artist in high-school. Soundcloud was the first platform I started uploading music to. The first song I uploaded to soundcloud was a cover of Lauryn Hill’s Ex-Factor. Until this day that song is still one of my favorites to sing. After playing around in the studio a bit I decided to put together an ep while I was in college. It was called “INTRO.” Great project and still proud of it til this day, but it’s no longer out and available. I’ve incorporated some old songs from that project into new ones on this upcoming one. Next came “Unmanipulated”… my baby. I love that project and the process it took to create it so much. So simple just me and the producer/engineer. Since “Unmanipulated” I’ve dropped 2 singles, “Not too deep” I got to record in LA and “Too Much Dip.” Both records I used to test the waters of what people want to hear from me. It’s easy to get in a space where you can get caught up in worrying about that as an artist. Now I understand it’s best for me to express what God put in me. Not on purpose, but by life’s design it’s been a little while since I’ve released music. I’ve gotten to experience working on music for other artist’s and being hired as a wedding singer in the meantime. Grateful I get to be hired to just sing or just write. It’s fun separating the two sometime.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Now a days it’s not about supporting talent it’s about supporting what’s already popular. Sheep mentality is annoying. Then people complain about the quality of music without recognizing that they only support what the media tells them to.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Feeling like my family and people around me should be my biggest supporters. I had to accept the fact that everyone has their own idea of who I am and who I should be. Me developing myself as an artist and really just as a person overall may not always align with their version of me and that’s okay.
