We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kay-Lani Rivera. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kay-Lani below.
Hi Kay-Lani, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I first started in the beauty industry there wasn’t a space for Latina’s who looked like myself. We didn’t have a large representation for Latina’s in an industry where the largest consumer are Latina women. I wanted to create a space for us and showcase my talent in this industry. Along the way I’ve built some amazing relationships with people and have been told may times how I’ve made people feel accepted in a space they didn’t always feel like that belonged in.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started off as a makeup artist for a big beauty company. After studying the craft more and more I then decided to venture out and become a freelance makeup artist. Once becoming a freelance makeup artist I started to build a clientele and would also share my work online. People really gravitated with my artistry online so it eventually encouraged me to begin filming YouTube tutorials. I really enjoyed the educational side of the beauty industry teaching others about a skill I’ve developed with studying and practicing. I’ve always been very personable on my platforms and I truly believe that’s what has set me apart from others. Aside from my craft, people really relate to me on a personal level. I’ve always been very open about my life and all of the wins and struggles that came with it.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have always been myself on social media. I never pretended to be perfect, I never made my life seem like it were perfect & I have never shied away from being honest. I think that’s what really helped big such a big community, because of how much people relate to me. From my professional life down to my personal life.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Social media really helped build my clientele. Sharing my work online mainly before and after photos/videos of my clients definitely grew my clientele greatly and rapidly. Social media can be a very great source for building a business if don’t correctly.
