We were lucky to catch up with Kay L recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I think I always knew I wanted to be involved in the arts since I was a child. But I believe the day I realized it and wanted to pursue it was when I performed at my high school talent show. I did a Michael Jackson dance performance as well as rapped a verse and the feedback and response from my classmates, teachers, parents in the crowd even students from schools around the city put me on such a high. It was in those moments that I knew I didn’t want to do anything else in life.
Kay , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I’m an artist and an activist first before anything. I got involved in music at a very young age and always wanted to write and perform. I believe I’ve been an activist my whole life but was only viewed as one publicly whenever some sort of social injustice was happening in my city or abroad and I felt the need to speak on it publicly in hopes of creating change. I think what I’m most proud of is having people in the street coming up to me saying things like “this song of yours changed my life” or “your music got me through hard times” it’s really rewarding. Even to have people tell me that my work in the community and dedication to change has inspired them to do the same, it’s moments like that, that really make it all feel worth it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To me the goals are never ending. Whenever I achieve or knock down a goal I set out for myself I already have 5-10 more goals that I’ve set for myself. So to me there’s no finish line, it’s a grind everyday and it never ends because there’s always something new I want to accomplish.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Yes! A lot of people don’t realize that creativity can hit you at any moment. It’s not just when you’re in the studio or on stage. You can be driving on the street, walking through a mall, or in the middle of a meeting. It’s whenever the universe decides to sprinkle that energy on you at any given moment. To me it’s something special.
