Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kay Kent. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
When I think of my legacy, I want my story to be passed on – I want to be a role model for the future generations to come. I hope to inspire our future generations to pursue their passions and take innovative to do good things for the world. My story doesn’t need to be known by millions to be inspired to do the right thing. I know I still have a lot of my life left, but when I leave this Earth, I want to be known as a hard-worker who never gave up on her aspirations.
That is a key quality we need for our current and future leaders. If we don’t want our world to literally fall apart, we need to share our concerns and never stop fighting until there is change.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who may not know anything about me, let me give a brief introduction about myself:
I’m Kay Kent, Co-Editor-In-Chief for Girlhood Magazine. I currently reside in a small southern town in New Jersey and a in my junior year of high school – my third year studying Digital Media, in hopes to become a director and screenwriter. When I’m not busy, I’m usually scrolling on Tiktok/Pinterest or writing my book!!
I first found Girlhood Magazine one night scrolling through Instagram – the post introduced the magazine and then said that they were hiring. Given my background in graphic design and advocacy, specifically for women’s rights, I knew that this would be a great opportunity for me, so I applied to be a graphic designer and got accepted – from there is history.
Established in 2023, Girlhood Magazine’s mission from the start was to uplift girls around the globe and allow them a space to be heard. Although I originally joined the team as a way to boost my portfolio, this statement really aligned with my ideals. Growing up, my dad always encouraged me to advocate for issues that I thought needed to be brought to the public’s attention. During the COVID-19 quarantine, I got really interested in Feminism and started to read more and more about it. Before doing research, I thought Feminism was just “girl-power” – but little did I know that it would be so much more complicated than that. When I discovered what was really going on, I knew I wanted to join the fight for equality. Especially in 2022, when the Roe V. Wade case got overturned – I was constantly sharing posts on social media and using my voice to raise awareness towards this issue. Joining Girlhood Magazine only fueled my desire to advocate for women’s rights.
Like I stated earlier, Girlhood Magazine strives to give girls a space to be heard and uplifted. We’re different than other magazines because we don’t just generate content to publish into our issues; We make sure to make girls from all around the globe feel supported! Our issues feature creative works, whether it be poems, personal essays, artwork, or even interviews with other women!!
We also love to highlight our team and make sure they’re heard as well – times can be stressful with deadlines, but we always make it aware that our staff can always talk to us, as we want our community to be a welcoming and fun space. Another thing we do to uplift our staff is doing weekly shoutouts, highlighting members that have stood out to us and any new staff we may have gotten that week.
Brand wise, I would say I am most proud of how far we have come since the beginning. In the past year, we have gained so many followers and staff, and even published five digital issues, currently working on our sixth. It takes a lot to run a magazine, but we all come together to pitch in.
What I want the world to know about Girlhood Magazine is that we’re more than just a magazine that publishes work, but we’re also a community that offers support and encouragement towards girls. We welcome anyone into our community! We’re so proud of our work and accomplishments so and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me, the most rewarding aspect of being creative is to see people enjoy your work. It doesn’t have to be about earning money or successful, but to see people enjoy something you put so much time into just makes you feel a certain way. For example, when we see people enjoying reading our magazine issues, it makes us happy and in a way, relieved. Personally, when I share a chapter of my book that I wrote and see my friends enjoy it and give me feedback is rewarding. At least to me, enjoyment lets me know that I “made it” and it wasn’t all for nothing.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
At first, I thought I would only commit a small amount of time to Girlhood Magazine per week. Little did I know that I would literally be committing an entire chunk of my free time towards running the magazine.
As demanding as my schedule is, I have learned to balance my time between the magazine and other responsibilities, such as school and work. It’s been a challenge, considering I’m in my junior year of high school, which happens to be the hardest year, but I still have been able to commit a lot of time with the magazine!
Although, given my demanding schedule, I do like to prioritize self care and putting time aside for yourself. Sometimes it feels like a never ending cycle of tasks to complete, but even setting aside at least an hour to do something for yourself is such a reward, especially after a long day of work.
