We were lucky to catch up with Kay De’Anna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kay, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started De’Anna Bundles in 2017, almost a year after high school graduation in 2016. I started because I’ve always loved everything beauty and wanted to contribute to women looking to maintain and build their confidence. I remember sitting down at work telling my coworkers, Aliyah and Enice that I would love to have my own business and they both said “Hair”. I was one to always have my hair and makeup done, sometimes being told that I was too dolled up for work. In 2018, I expanded, teaching myself how to make handmade wig units and offering a wig making service as well as selling bundles. Starting a business was like a rollercoaster ride. At first you’re nervous, but still excited but as it gets closer to launch, your nerves are all over the place. My social anxiety really had an impact on my business, I would often advertise to only people I knew or I would have my friends tell others about my business but I quickly learned, Scared money don’t make any money.
Kay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Yes, My name is Kay and my middle name is De’Anna which is where De’Anna Bundles came about. I started my business at 19 years old, I’m currently 24. As previously stated, I got into the beauty industry because making people feel beautiful is something that I love to do.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Whew. Funding my business was not easy, especially at 19. I was working part-time which was bringing in no real money. I had to quickly learn how to budget. Each check I received I tried to put money aside and save for hair investments. Of course, at 19 I barely had discipline when it came to money. I wanted the new shoes, outfits and I needed my to keep my hair done myself. I quickly had to unlearn those unhealthy spending habits and apply pressure to not only myself but to my business. I worked hard to be promoted to full-time at my job where I received pay raises as well as an opportunity to work more hours which, allowed me to have more money in my pocket to sit aside for my business. I wasn’t thinking about loans, I knew I didn’t want to have to owe anyone and It was really hard to find grants.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
As of right now, just De’Anna Bundles. But just know, I have something beautiful in store for my business and you will be seeing it real soon.
