We recently connected with Kay Clinton and have shared our conversation below.
Kay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
As a doula, my journey has been interwoven with moments that are both heartwarming and deeply impactful. Each birth I’ve attended has been a testament to the strength and resilience of mothers, particularly within BIPOC communities. The defining moments in my career are not just the countless hours spent in the delivery room but the stories shared in quiet conversations with mothers. These stories have illuminated a troubling reality: a growing mortality rate among BIPOC families.
In the comfort of shared experiences, sitting with mothers after birth, I’ve listened as they recounted their fears, triumphs, and losses. It is in these moments that the gaps in the healthcare system became glaringly apparent. Many mothers shared tales of feeling unheard or dismissed by their providers, leading to preventable complications and, tragically, sometimes worse. The disparities in care were not just statistics but lived experiences that called for urgent attention and action.
Witnessing these stories firsthand has fueled my commitment to bridging these gaps. My role as a doula has evolved; it’s not just about providing physical and emotional support during birth but also about advocating for equitable care. I have become a voice for those who too often go unheard, working tirelessly to ensure that every mother, regardless of her background, receives the care and respect she deserves. The journey has been challenging, but the deep connections formed and the lives touched affirm that this work is not just necessary but profoundly transformative.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Let me share with you a little bit about myself, Kay Clinton. As the proud owner of this organization, I am a passionate community health worker, childbirth educator, and full-spectrum doula. I am immensely proud of the positive impact we have had on the lives of countless women and families. It is my mission to continue providing essential services and fostering a community that values and prioritizes maternal health. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our organization and the work that we do.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
As a doula, your heart is the real power behind your success. It’s your genuine passion for making a difference that can touch lives and transform communities. Building strong relationships within your community isn’t just a career boost—it’s a lifeline for the families you serve. By nurturing trust and cultivating connections, you create a circle of support that enriches everyone involved.
So how do we weave this web of community trust? It starts with active participation. Engage with local organizations, healthcare providers, and parenting groups. Be a familiar face at community events, workshops, and discussion panels—these are golden opportunities to introduce our services to a broader audience.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
BIPOC families have long exemplified resilience, especially when it comes to the journey of bearing and raising children. This enduring strength has been a cornerstone of their communities, passed down through generations as a testament to their spirit. My own resilience is deeply rooted in this rich legacy, inspired not only by these families but also by the countless women today who continue to navigate life with remarkable fortitude.
Choosing my career was a profound expression of this resilience. It was a conscious decision to carve out a path that not only fulfilled my personal aspirations but also aimed to make a meaningful impact on my community. In seeking something different for myself, I was driven by the desire to contribute to a future where opportunities and well-being are more accessible and equitable for all.
This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, as it embodies a commitment to honoring the past while forging a brighter, more inclusive future. My career is not just a job; it is a reflection of the hopes and dreams of those who came before me and those who will come after. It is a testament to the enduring strength and resilience that defines BIPOC families, and a beacon of possibility for what can be achieved when we dare to dream beyond the limits set before us.
