We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kay Blair. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kay below.
Kay, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
DWNTWNWRLD which stands for don’t waste no time with negativity started after a dark time in my life where I was searching for a creative and healthy way to express myself. I’ve always had a passion for the music industry and in 2016 you could say social media was at a sweet spot, especially Instagram (Meta). A friend suggested I put my search for inspiration, admiration of music and reach of the Internet altogether. I created an Instagram page, (Rap Couture) at the time, and started posting quotes and showing love to artists I believe in, the response was way better than expected and it’s something I enjoyed. I started connecting with people from all walks of life that needed a space to share their art and stories, I was more than willing to assist. With a growing audience more people started reaching out which led me to creating www.dwntwnwrld.com a platform where people could discover music, people of influence, entertainment and culture.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started working at ‘Koch Entertainment’ in Toronto, Ontario now owned by ‘Entertainment One about 15 years ago. Prior to that I was just obsessed with discovering music and the origin behind all these different genres. My first listening device was my mother’s portable Sanyo VIP 30 Walkman cassette player! I would take her gospel tapes and record Dj Starting From Scratch’s Megacity Mix on Flow 93.5 FM and listen to them over and over again, I can hear my mom yelling at me now saying, “It’s too loud!” Throughout the years I never let that little kid part of me die, and I bring that energy with me when posting, writing or interviewing artists and executives. Ultimately people want to be heard and I create that space for them no matter what level they are at through www.dwntwnwrld.com.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As cliche as it sounds, being a genuine human being! Almost 99% of the people I’m interviewing, I’ve never met before that and the questions tend to get very personal. You want the interviewee to feel as comfortable as you can or else your audience can feel them being short or non responsive with you and that makes for a dull listen. Do your research, the person on the other end can tell when you’ve never listened to any of their music, watched any of their shows etc.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
It’s a chance for creatives to take their audience into their own hands and create a limitless experience for both sides, but you can’t be lazy and have no core audience and expect to win with NFTs. Bloggers can also use this to their advantage if they expand the way they think about sharing others’ stories and art.
