We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ka’Vozia Glynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ka’Vozia below.
Ka’Vozia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey began, and continues, because of four main teachers. Curiosity. Experimentation. Perseverance. Devotion.
Speeding up the learning process doesn’t always make sense to me. Some things will take a while to click, while others will come quicker. For me, a certain level of open-mindedness, comprehension, action and retention are the most essential skills to be practiced.
Being stuck in survival mode and/or distractions stand in the way of learning more.
Ka’Vozia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey! My name is Ka’Vozia Glynn, my tag being KVOZIA or kreategurl. I am visual artist and photographer based in Florida. The current focus is on photobooth photography but I have a history with using the camera as a tool for creative storytelling.
Around 13 years ago when my brother was born, my interest in photography first sparked. I was 10 years-old. Photographing his early years and experiencing my family photograph each other opened a portal for me. I found access to connection and a new way of expression. When I got to high school, it became a passion and I was shooting as much as possible. That era of my life showed me so much as I went from shooting random pretty pictures to telling stories with more personal, passion projects. Since then, I’ve reflected on the lessons I learned and began working to grow into the woman I am becoming.
With any images I make, I love to explore the intersections of themes like identity, community, fashion, and culture. The task I have now is consistently making space for kreativity while sharing my gifts with more intentionality and integrity.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my perspective, shifting from the heavy idolization to a more realistic view of artists is something we could all benefit from. With the current climate, I think those clouds are starting to clear up a little bit and I hope it continues so the light can shine through.
Society can also improve by implementing better programs, policies, and rights that are accessible to the kreatives without much support or resources. We need more space for kreativity in our everyday lives. However, I do not think this is something that will just randomly happen one day…
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
A friend gifted me “Steal like An Artist” by Austin Kleon and I dived into “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron last year. I am currently starting “Women Who Run with the Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés & “More Than Enough” by Elaine Welteroth.
