We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kavita Melwani. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kavita below.
Kavita, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe the main difference between success is to keep going. This may sound simplistic, but it can be harder than it sounds. Some things that can take us off track can come as distractions and bright, shiny objects. Whenever I have questioned my own intuition and inner knowing – essentially given my power away to others – it has taken me off track.
A great coach will not give you the answers but bring out your own inner knowing when I work with clients that is my philosophy. Once they feel aligned and know what they want, I can help with strategies to help them achieve their deepest desires.
Every time I go through the next level of my business I have noticed my pattern: business slows down, I can start to look externally for answers and go down lots of paths that are not for me, when I come back to my own power that is when I move forward.
Kavita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started as a coach in 2014 when a lot of people didn’t even know what a coach was. I remember telling people at in-person networking events that I was a “transformational coach,” and most of the time, people would say, “like a therapist? Or what is the difference between you and a therapist?” I spent a lot of time educating people about what a coach does, now things are different. There are so many more coaches, and most people know about the industry. Now it is about connecting with your soul contract clients and being clear about how you can help.
My journey to coaching started when I was running a jewelry business, I felt lost and confused about my life. Externally, I had everything and felt empty. As I was at a networking event marketing my spiritual jewelry business, I met a life coach, she was having a Vision Board workshop, and I had always wanted to create a vision board, so I went. I remember sitting there at the table, flipping through magazines, and everyone else seemed to know what to put on their board, but I didn’t. She came up to me and asked if I needed help, and I said yes. At that moment, I followed my intuition even though I was scared, we worked together for a few months, which eventually led me to my first coaching certification.
Now I work as a Spiritual success and business coach. I started as a life coach for empaths and HSPs (Highly sensitive people) and did that for many years. Since I grew up in an entrepreneurial family and have owned and operated various businesses since 2003, being a success/coach comes so naturally to me. I love empowering my clients to run their purposeful, profitable businesses. Now I work with empathic wellness coaches and service-based businesses to create businesses aligned with their soul.
My work is very individualized, I don’t believe that there is one path toward success, and there are so many strategies that can lead to success. When I work with a client, we go into working through their subconscious blocks, mindset, and what they actually want, defining success, and once we do that, we work on creating a marketing plan. The marketing plan will use their strengths and their mission to create their version of a successful business. I do believe creating income is important, and there is more to success than just income, which is why I follow this holistic approach.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the lesson that business has to be hard, making money = sacrifice
I grew up in a family of immigrants, my parents came to the US and were struggling for a long time. They are entrepreneurs and not highly educated, so their path to success involved a brick-and-mortar small business. It took some time and a lot of sacrifices, but they grew several successful businesses. Through the process, they experienced family using them and no longer talking to them because of business/money, employees stealing from them, not having family vacations because they couldn’t leave their jewelry store, plus a lot more challenges.
As a child and adolescent, I witnessed all of the challenges and subconsciously equated business success = the sacrifice of life/relationships. For a long time, I was struggling, I would start to make money and then sell my business, move, or the business would stop. I realize that I created it because I was afraid of what might happen. I did need to do my work and still continue to move forward despite the discomfort that may arise.
Now I believe that success in business is income, the lifestyle, and living your purpose through your business. I know that I can and do create a life where I can be present for my family and relationships.
