We recently connected with Kaulyn Koy and have shared our conversation below.
Kaulyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I have spent 7 years in the music industry and a pain point I would hear artists share is how difficult it was to land on a playlist or how hard it was to grow and scale as an artists in todays musical landscape. In the pandemic I started to really get creative and unleash many passions I had that I kept pent up over the years due to fear, exhaustion or never having the time to be creative. This is when I started making candles. This lead me to think how can I make this better while providing a unique candle and helping artists. That is how Algorhythm was born! The overall goal is to not only change the candle industry, but help support up and coming artists by pairing a playlist with each candle in order to drive streams to their record. I really felt this would be a worthwhile endeavor given how many people love artists and candles and what better way to experience both at the same time! Now I knew I was not solving a problem as it pertained to candles but I knew this would be a great way to elevate the experience of enjoying a candle and listening to music. My approach is definitely unique as I think of growing Algorhythm being we are a music focused candle company versus simply just focusing on the candle. We think of things from an artistic landscape by thinking about the vibe, mood, sound and overall approach to the way we do candles and music discovery.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I would like to think that the music industry chose me, and I chose it right back. At the time I was getting into music, I really did not know what I was doing nor where it would lead me. The only thing I know is how much I loved music and art and how I wanted to protect, promote and elevate it in new and exciting ways. I have always loved scent, candles and anything perfume so combining the two felt like a no-brainer. What sets Algorhythm apart from the rest of the candle industry is the fact that we provide music to each vessel and our commitment to sustainability. After each burn you have the ability to up-cycle the vessel into a coffee mug as we designed a dent on the side of the vessel for perfect gripping. The candle industry can be very wasteful and we do not want to contribute to that waste in any way. We truly are operating on 3 pillars: music, candles and coffee! To be honest, I feel my proudest moments have yet to come but for now I am proud of launching the company in 2024 and proud oh how we advocate for artists!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
How I am building my audience is honestly authenticity. I am showing the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to building my business. It helps people feel relatable to you and approachable. In this moment in time, I feel people want raw and real and do not want to feel so alone. Providing my perspective through the ups and downs of building a business helps people feel less alone for those who are also in the entrepreneur journey. My only advice is just start! Don’t focus on how perfect the video or content has to be. It’s better to show up imperfect than to not show up at all.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I actually boot-strapped the business from scratch! I had no investors it was just me. I got a serving gig at a local restaurant and starting having my side hustle fund the business and continue to boot-strap for Algorhythm as it grows today. Investors is definitely something I am looking to in the near future.
