Katy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are my best friends, my mom just passed away from a 3-year battle with ALS and nothing will ever be the same.
She is the reason I’m starting my new career, changing lives through skin and growing my own business.
To the very, very end my mom busted all our balls! She was a strong-willed woman with very specific expectations in her life and everyone in it. Even when she couldn’t talk, eat or move on her own she would take all her energy to give you a look to know you messed something up!
This is why throughout my life I watched her accomplish it all.
As I sat by her bedside towards the end she was able to tell me:
“As you face the end of your life it doesn’t matter what position you had at work or the boss you proved wrong. It matters the relationships you made and who is next to you when things get tough and you’re at the end”
My entire life I watched my mom climb that corporate ladder and make a name for herself. She told me she didn’t regret how hard she worked but she regretted missing out on being a hands-on mom.
We moved all around, took risks and had to live apart so many times.
Like her, I’m starting over in my career after having kids. No matter what I know I will make her proud and be successful in my own business. But, what I will always put first is my family and keep those I love close.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a board-certified Esthetician as well as Founder/Owner of illume | facials by katy.
My entire focus for my practice is high-maintenance work to stay low-maintenance daily. In more detail, helping people get their most healthy and radiant skin to illuminate their confidence in daily life.
With my numerous advanced trainings I specialize in custom facials. Educating each person in their skin and what it needs, every skin is different. Knowledge is power, the more you know the better you treat, and the more confidence you will have.
I have a studio in Upper Arlington as well as mobile services to those that can’t make it into the studio. Those that have accessibility issues or can’t leave the house I’ll come to you!
The minute you come into my studio or follow along on Instagram (@illumebykaty) you’ll notice I’m quite different than other facialists. I focus on giving you the power of knowledge and use an 100% honest approach to the struggles of many common skin concerns (aging, acne, rosacea) of which every single person has!
What can we do to treat it? To illuminate your confidence the minute you get up in the morning. You don’t have to hide behind makeup or avoid living your life because you aren’t confident in your looks.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Having 10+ years in corporate fashion I had to look at the competitiveness to get ahead, taking others down to grow, and constantly judging. Throw it out the window!
This toxic corporate environment drained my entire life and made me feel inadequate.
I NEVER want to make another feel that way, I thrive in building others up and seeing their confidence shine through.
Working for someone to be their best self is an absolutely treasure.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Hindsight is 20/20.
Seeing the success grow in my second career and the fulfillment I get every day, makes me wish that I started here. If I had started my business at the very beginning just think of the lives I could have changed by now!
But, at the same time do I wish that? I learned what can truly make me happy from having experiences that didn’t.
I am strong and successful due to my experiences in my earlier years that molded me today.
