Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katy Montgomery. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I have been blessed with family and friends who love and support me unconditionally! They truly are the backbone of my business, and I could never have gotten to where I am right now without them. When it comes to asking them for support, I know that they would do anything for me at the drop of a hat. Asking for help is always hard, but I am so lucky to have a support system that I am confident would be there for me, no matter what. One boundary that I do try to keep is for my personal affairs. I feel comfortable asking for business related favors, but I really try to keep my personal and business lives separate!
Katy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Katy Montgomery, and I grew up in Mount Pleasant, SC. Over the years, I have expressed my creativity in many different ways, but my heart always led me towards opening my own stationery store. Now I own Social Paper Company as of 2017, at 1212 Pherigo st in Mount Pleasant, SC.! My store sells stationery, cards, and fun gifts including candles, bags, and fun decor! We also custom make napkins, cards, and invitations. I love being able to work together with customers, and create the perfect details to tie together their special occasions. This hands on experience is what really sets us apart from anyone else. I am loving the process of being creative, growing personally and professionally, making so many friends, and learning something new every day!
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I worked with Deeruel when I was in high school, and she was a jewelry/stationery/invitation designer. I then ventured off to school, and several other jobs. I then found myself presented with the opportunity to take over the stationery business, with the guidance of Dee. Now I have owned social paper co for 7 years.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My ability to work hands on with customers is truly what sets this business apart from the rest. Being able to craft a product together and personalize it is the experience you know you will get when you walk through our doors.
