Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katy Frost . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As a photographer my mission is to give each client a moment to relive over and over agin! Our most memorable days can become hazy details as time passes. As much as we might treasure each moment spent with our loved ones, we can’t capture all the details in our memories. In six months you might not remember the flavor of your wedding cake. You will probably forget the scents and sounds that weaved the backdrop to your special day. And hopefully, you’ll forget the stress and worries that led up it. For as many things as you may willingly forget, there are a thousand more that you want to hold on to. Photographs freeze those moments not to be forgotten into a frame you can cherish for years to come and hand down to the next generations to follow. Your wedding photos are more than ink on a page. They are the “butterflies in your stomach and heart in your throat” moments frozen in time for you to treasure.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Katy! I live in northern Colorado and am very involved with my community. My days are filled with working at a local coffee shop, playing volleyball, swing dancing, life with my church body, sunset catching, and anything that involves people and coffee. I absolutely love all things elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful! My greatest desire in life and everything I do is to showcase God’s creation and glory. He intricately created every person and holds them in the very palm of His hand; also upholding each second by the word of His power. I love freezing those seconds into a frame. I absolutely love capturing moments of pure joy, immense surprise, deep connection, and passionate love. I specialize in weddings and engagements, however, when I can get a birth, newborn, or a family shoot in, you bet I’m going to jump on it! My greatest desire as a photographer is to give you moments frozen in time, leaving you with something to look back on and re-live, but also pass on to the next generation.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth 100%! I realized how vital this was to my business when I moved locations and had to re-build a new network in a new part of the state. It took a lot of time and hard work but once that was established my business took off as people recommended me to their friends, family and co-workers. Build that relationship with your clients!! Not only is it so fun to have new friends because you were there for literally the most important moments of their life, but you will get new connections to their people!!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn the value of my work and to ALWAYS have written and signed contracts! It’s a funny story now but at the time I was traumatized. I did a wedding for free for someone trying to get my name out there and build my portfolio. They promised me a website design and logo in trade for my services. Before the wedding day they also had asked for the RAW files and I explained to them why I couldn’t do that but they seemed fine with my decision not to. Wedding day came, which was a disaster as I learned they were drug dealers and they kept leaving the venue to deal and use….suffice to say the wedding day was quite chaotic but pushed through and captured and helped with what I could. At the end of the day I got home to realize my SD cards were missing from my bag. I ran back to the venue searching but they were nowhere to be found. A few days later the couple contacted me to say they had found my SD cards “lying” around and asked if I wanted them back. I never got the website or logo, they stole the SD cards to get the RAW files, and on top of me shooting their wedding for free AND editing and delivering the gallery in the end, they ended up writing a complaint about my editing style and said they didn’t like it and wanted me to re-edit them. I had a few more incidents (less major) that happened in the beginning stages of my business that taught me to always (Firstly) have a written contract to protect myself (as well as my clients). And secondly if a client is unwilling to pay for your work they will never value it!
