We were lucky to catch up with Katy Allison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katy, thanks for joining us today. Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
We started out with just one aesthetician. It was always our goal to expand and grow our business. After interviewing the first few people and some trial and error, we reached a better understanding of the types of people we needed to make our business successful. We found some of them through online forums and some through word of mouth. We go through an extensive interview process with everyone to make sure that we are a good fit for each other, then begin training. One of the cool things about our training is that we train our aestheticians in energy work and have found that it really transforms the way we touch and interact with our clients. If we were to start hiring today, I don’t think we would change much because we needed some of our errors and mistakes to learn from for us to have found the team that we have now. We have an amazing staff, and we are lucky to have them!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always loved this industry since I was little. One of my business partners, Jill, paved the way for me and has always been the best mentor to me. When I started out in the industry, I reached out to her and then met my other partner, Andrea, and we worked together to make The Only Facial what it is now! We offer one facial at one set price of $125. We do not accept tips and we do not upcharge for anything. It is all included in the price of the facial. We want to make skin care accessible and simple for people. Our facial includes 12 steps that are completely customized to each person and their specific skin goals. We can help with an array of concerns such as, acne, fine lines, pigmentation, and more. We are proud to be able to create meaningful relationships with our clients and put them on a path to feeling the best they can in their skin. Our goal is to make skin care a priority and not a luxury.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my first business partner when I was 14. My mom and my grandma saw her for facials, and she made me want to go into this industry. When I graduated esthetics school, I worked for about 9 months and decided I needed a switch and reached out to Jill. Jill then introduced me to my other partner, Andrea, and we started The Only Facial together!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our unique business model helped us grow our reputation. Our concept is simple and to the point. We want to make a difference in people’s skin and help them reach their goals without all of the guesswork. We never want our clients to feel like they are in an environment that they are being pushed into anything. We are here to work with them and their lifestyles to help guide them to the best skin they can achieve.
