We were lucky to catch up with Katt De Moss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katt, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
One major characteristic about me, personally, is I am a total sun babe! I can spend every day at the beach, countless hours getting lost in a book under a warm sun. There’s just something about the sunlight that brings me pure happiness, motivation and growth and is a place I turn to heal and to find answers when I feel a little lost. So during the pandemic, in the midst of me trying to get this idea of a brand off the ground, I spent a portion of each day at the beach. It helped me think, I felt clearer and more focused and it was definitely where most of my ideas for my company began. There’s one part of the day, that no matter where I am, what conversation Im in etc… it will always make this rush of euphoria come over me for a moment- the golden hour. It’s such a peaceful and gorgeous fragment of time that in that small moment, absolutely everything is just that much more beautiful being sun kissed in the perfect golden filter. The day I was working on coming up with company names, I was leaving the beach towards the later part of the afternoon and caught the ocean tide during the golden hour. Immediately, I thought “GOLDIE!” and it stuck perfectly!
Katt, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Katt De Moss, a Fashion Designer, based out of Los Angeles and I own the clothing brand GOLDIE. Since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a designer, so I followed that dream and made it my reality. I grew up in Kansas City, went to college in Denver then headed to the west coast to pursue my career. Throughout my career I have designed for many large global companies, small local companies and everything in between. I was a designer for a very well-known company when the pandemic happened which ultimately lead to me being laid off from my job. That moment of having all my financial security ripped out from underneath me was the worst and scariest feeling i’ve ever experienced and I never wanted to give anyone that power over me again so, I created my own brand- Goldie. During my 10 years as a designer I would go in and out of factories and sewing facilities on a regular basis but one day as I was picking up my first cut of garments for goldie, something happened and it changed the trajectory of my company. I was killing time walking around the sewing warehouse as the sewers were wrapping up and a heavy feeling came over me as I realized what was happening around me. On this particular day, it was about 85 degrees outside and inside the warehouse I was so uncomfortably hot just pacing around for the 15 minutes I was there which made me panic as the realization set in. There was no AC, no running water, fabric/trim scraps in every corner and on every surface and I had been supporting these types of working conditions for all these years- conditioned to believe it was perfectly normal. That should never be normal. I took my garments, sat in my car and felt so much sadness for what negative impacts I had contributed to and decided I would build my company on very high standards of sustainability. All garments are created in-house in my design studio so I can ensure all labor is fair, all my fabrics/trims are vintage, recycled or repurposed and everything Is hand dyed in small batches to reduce the amount of waste I produce as much as possible.
I am most proud that I have maintained the values I set in place even when It was the more challenging route to take. Because of that, Goldie has gotten the attention of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour and many other magazines which I have features in.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of Mouth! This is by far the best source I have found. Many of my newer customers are from recommendations of past customers.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing a complete stranger walking passed me wearing a garment I designed, knowing they have no idea I was the designer behind their outfit.
