We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katsura Mouri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katsura below.
Alright, Katsura thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I did not plan to start playing music professionally. It happened naturally. It’s challenging but rewarding for me. My music has been developing greatly since I started. I actually enjoy it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a sound artist who uses a turntable as my instrument.
Most people think turntables are the device for playing recorded music. I don’t use them that way. I play music with the humming sound that they produce. This is like an instrument to me.
I can change the humming sounds with effects like sounds of ambient or guitar.
I also use circuit bending in turntables. I play the music by using the cartridge for amplified sounds like John Cage.
I have been making different styles of music performance – I used 3D objects replacing playing music using records or turntables. I played “The REVERSI game” by using 36 turntables and 36 black & white records. It focused on the deviation and synthetic voice. I do installations as well.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I don’t have any specific goals, but I want to continue doing this activity for as long as I live.
All I want to do is discover the potential of turntables and continue to innovate.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This is the same answer as before, but I enjoy discovering the possibilities of turntables and constantly innovating. I always want to go beyond the conventional concept of turntables and create new technologies and new sounds that no one has tried before. I also feel joy when I am able to create something like this, and when the audience who listens to it or sees my work is truly happy.
