Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katrina Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katrina , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Right before moving to to my Aunt and uncles house. I was helping out on a farm that had some alpacas. Per normal I spent more time with the alpacas then the people. The lady decided they needed to leave her farm. She was over it and they needed to be gone. I called around and there was not a place in the Colorado Area that took alpacas. There is dog, cat and horse rescues but nothing for alpacas. So after a few calls we were headed to get alpacas to bring to my new home.
After conversations we wondered how many of these animals didn’t have a place to land when they needed a safe spot. I was spending so much time with these alpacas and soon I signed them up in 4h. One of the projects was to take them to vistit a few senior living homes. After doing that people started to call with animals that need homes and seniors that wanted visits. From there it was like a wild fire it grew so quickly. Animals that we were their last chance were coming in as quick as we could take the calls. Some came to the farm and were trained for therapy, other were getting adopted out, and some were just enjoying the love that came with being on the farm.

Katrina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Animal were never a part of my life; They were the whole entire thing. You may not see it now but my childhood was very different and to say I was scared of strangers (or people in general) is an understatement. I was quite and hidden due to the trama of my childhood and my only true happyness came from my animals. The lovely neighbor that told me she had a horse that I could come see had no idea what she was getting into. I went to see her horse more than i bet she had planned on. He was my therapist, my passion and the reason life was worth living. He knew everything i couldn’t tell the rest of the world. Was my shoulder to cry on and honstly what got me threw some of the worst years of my life. Not only was this horse my go to I used animal to a exchange to not tell my family ugly secrets. You don’t want someone to know about this; that nice I want a rabbit. I had a whole zoo in our no pet apartment that know one knew about. At a very young age I was paying for it all but that didn’t matter what mattered is that I had friends.
Jump forward through Child Protective services, being passed around from one family members to another (all with the animals) and I finally ended up in a stable enviroment at my “aunt” and “uncles” (that’s a story for another day.) I bet you can’t guess what happened then! They had land and all their horses had moved on to greenier pastures while theres sat empty; but not for long.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Our farm has always been about the Therapy animals and rescue animals. Not sure if you know this or not the cost of having a farm of this size is pretty expensive and the money wasnt there. We struggled with funding and grants were hard to get because our farm was so unigue. We had to pivot and fast. If the animals already love the attention why not do petting zoos. We started to advertise petting zoos with the therapy animals and soon the farm was working on keeping its self afloat with the main mission still being the same.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Clients for us are normally senior living homes for the most part. We have worked hard to make their life easy which in returns keeps our pretty simple. They want one thing for their residents that to keep them happy and enjoying their last couple of chapters. We want to bring in the animals and create a fun day for them and bring stories out of their brain that may have been stored for while.
