We were lucky to catch up with Katrina Winston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katrina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I manage my own social media because i know exactly what I want I don’t have to wait for someone else to do it, I do need to spend more time with adding pictures and post on my social media.
Katrina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Katrina, and I am the Founder & CEO of K EliteDance Academy. K Elite Dance Academy was founded in 2019. We started out as Katrina’s Dance Team but due to our increase in enrollment and our uniqueness, we have grown to who we are today. We have partnered with MLK leadership academy to provide dance classes as well as form a dance team for their students. We have performed at a variety of events such as games, assemblies, as well as pop-up shops in the Grand Rapids area.
In 2020, I decided to branch out on my own due to the school closures by the effects of Covid. I then partnered with one of my business mentors, Iryonna Davis, to teach dance to children aged 3 to 18. 2022 became the most exciting year in dance for us. We were featured in a magazine, and we were a part of several podcasts, including “ Surviving Start Up.” We also were featured on 6 billboards throughout the Grand Rapids area! I’ve had the pleasure of working with two artists based out of Michigan.
What makes us stand out from other dance academies is the fact that we accept all children regardless of dance experience and we make it affordable for low-income families.
Without the help of my team, Iryonna Davis, Shamica S. “StarElite” (Business Coach), Tramaine B. “King Kaution” ( Music Editor), and Candis Martin ( Uniform Designer) I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Now, in 2023, I was blessed to be in a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Grand Rapids to take my dance to another level. To those who want to start a business, I would say stay focused, make sure you have a support system, and never give up.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My strategy for growing my clientele is to host pop up shops where they get to see my team perform, meet me and the team as well as shop for clothes, shoes and other items.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I build my audience for K Elite Dance academy on social media by posting videos and pictures of us on all social media platforms and talking about how we got started.
