Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katrina Weston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project that I’ve worked on were the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that I had the honor of customizing for a customer. It meant so much to me for two reasons: The first reason was my customer wanted the dolls to gift them to her mother. Her mom had made her a set of these dolls when she was a child. They had gotten lost many, many years ago during a move. Making these doll for her to gift to her mother meant so much to me as I had lost my mother about 4 months prior. My mother was my biggest supporter when it came down to my business. Secondly, I had total creative control with some small details that my customer wanted the dolls to have. They came out perfectly. More importantly, my customer absolutely loved them and that’s all that mattered.
Katrina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Katrina Weston, some people call me Trina some call me Kat. I create crochet dolls from memories that reflect YOU.
I always knew that I wanted to crochet from when I was a kid. I was always playing with my baby dolls and wrapping them in my crochet baby blanket. My mom made it for me when I was born and I still have it to this day. It is the fabric fabric of my business. My reason… My why. I wanted other women, men and children to either gift or have their own baby blankets. I wanted people to have that memory stored within themselves and physically in the form of the blanket. Little did I know when I started that it was going to evolve the way it did.
I started with hats and scarfs from YouTube, then built my way up to learning how to read patterns. I started making baby blankets and stuffed animals. If someone told me then that I’d be making dolls, I’d tell them they were crazy!! There was no way that these hands would be able to manipulate yarn that way.
In 2016, I met two awesome, crochet doll makers on Instagram and I had never seen dolls made from yarn look the way theirs did. It was pure amazement!! I started following them, buying their patterns, taking their classes and forming bonds with these women and an entire sleuth of doll makers as well. A lot of people have no idea that we exist, but we do! I’ve made a lot of life long friendships in this community and I’m beyond happy that it found me!
I’ve grown to have a passion for creating dolls that have meaning to them. It’s more than creating a black doll . It’s creating a memory. A representation of who one is, will be or was. Of all the dolls I’ve created nothing brings me greater joy than being able to customize a doll for someone. This is a one of a kind doll that they will have forever and into their next life.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media, wow what a journey it is and continues to be, lol. So back in 2018 I believe, one of my mentors/friend introduced us (our crochet community) to a segment called May live a Day. May Live A Day is where you go live every day for the month of May. I was 100% terrified, but I’ll tell you by the end it felt natural. Not natural like I belong on a big screen lol, but natural like I was talking to people I knew. At one point I was going live every Wednesday for the prompt “WIP Wednesday” which means Work In Progress Wednesday. I haven’t been as present as I used to be on social media, as it can be both draining and overwhelming sometimes.
My advice for anyone who is looking to build a social media presence: try working with prompts to help you along the way. Flash back Fridays, motivational Mondays, etc etc. once you get used to those prompts explore new ones and even go live. People want to see you and connect. They want to see themselves in you. They also, don’t want all the good. They want what’s real.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the joy it brings to others. It’s indescribable sometimes. Can you imagine making something with your hands and it just means the world to someone else AND you get to share a piece of that joy with them while creating it!!! It truly is awesome and even if I never made a penny, I would still make blankets and dolls.
