We recently connected with Katrina Gorman and have shared our conversation below.
Katrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I would say my most meaningful art original was inspired by moving to San Antonio to pursue my dream. I’m originally from Indiana so moving to a big city felt like the bees knees to me. Getting around downtown had such a learning curve. All the one ways and traffic. Well, one evening started out to a networking meeting to talk about my art and to start meeting new people since I just got to town. I got so lost downtown. I circled the block several times when I decided to pull over to the side and sit to gather my thoughts. That’s when I looked up and saw how beautiful this city is that I just moved to and felt really thankful for this new adventure. This whole moment created my largest art original to date called, “There is Beauty at Night” It took over 70k feet of fabrics and a year to complete.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Since my Mom and oldest sister quilted, I believe I’ve always loved fabrics. Although their style was more traditional quilting, I went a different direction with the fabrics I picked and loved. All the colors, patterns and definitely the sound scissors make when cutting into fabrics. So, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting and creating new art with it. Hours on end where spent in my room creating growing up and the other time was drawing. So as I’m a self taught artist, today I create what I feel in several mediums. I mainly depends on how the story would like to present itself in art.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I really appreciate this question because early in my journey, I just wanted to create. Being a creative with a business, the easiest part is the passion as I’m pretty much always inspired and ready to create something new. I would have loved to know more about how your mindset and having as clear vision for what you want to share with the world helps in all other areas of your business. I do believe every artist has their own journey and trial, errors are apart of the process in all areas. If I’d known those areas sooner, it would have helped.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve had to un learn on my journey is to accept where I am right now and know it’s only getting better. Also, not to compare my journey with other artists. Especially on social media when artists share their day to day experiences, it was hard for me to understand why I wasn’t farther than where I am or why. As time goes on and by changing how I view my journey, I can see how each year how I’m evolving and my art is also. So I’m thankful that what is meant for me comes when it’s meant for it to happen because I’m ready for it.
