We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katrina Doran. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katrina below.
Katrina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My mom is my hero. It took me a long while to understand this, for as a young woman I was keen on having an exciting career and traveling the world. My mom did not seem to care at all about these things and when I asked her, “what did you dream of being as a young girl?”, her response was that she never thought about it. What she did like was to climb into her favorite tree and watch the clouds. My mom had a gentle nature, a kindness and a wisdom for the simple pleasures of life. She did not need to chase after anything. During her last month or so of life, her preference was to turn off all electronic noise and turn to watching the play of birds in the trees, the clouds floating by, the antics of squirrels, the world of nature and one of peace. In this way, I now carry her wisdom with me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For folks who don’t know me, I am an artist specializing in the fine craft of mosaic art and sculpture. I also teach classes, workshops and re~treats utilizing my lifetime of studies in psychology, art, science, and healing arts practices. I am the creator of The Who Am I? Project, a series of classes designed to address the ways in which we may cultivate a sense of harmonious well being and make space for creative expressions to arise. I like to believe the world is a magical place filled with awe and wonder and it is this I wish to share with the world. My artworks are a reflection of this belief and I am in the process of creating my own type of fantasy world in my home and studio.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, for me, is that it takes me to new understandings of myself and my relationship to this world. Each new project is a type of puzzle to be solved and I get to be the dreamer of that solution. To dream a thing and then make it real is not always easy and doesn’t always work the way it was imagined. It does, however, always lead to the next idea and the next. I have a big vision for myself feel very fortunate to live this life in alignment with my creative expression.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission driving my creative journey is to live true to myself and in that way bring healing and inspiration to others.
