We recently connected with KATRINA Carpenter and have shared our conversation below.
KATRINA, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
On August 6th 2011 I lost my mind due to ovarian cancer. That was the start of my pain. January 31st 2015 I lost my dad to heart failure. That was the year I started Jean’ s Angels. James Angel was founded to pour into you to have a parent with a terminal illness and also to care for our senior citizens. We will provide services like tutoring, annual angel tree, mentoring program. We will also provide clothing and hygiene items two children in need on a quarterly basis we will go to the nursing home and read to them and take them gifts. And 20/20 I lost two brothers a month apart so I started jeans Angels heart for the homeless. My brother Rufus always wanted to work with the homeless so I felt it was my duty to fulfill this dream for him. We started by going out and providing hot meals to the homeless as well as hygiene bags, new clothing and shoes. After listening to their true needs we started building mobile units to provide laundry service, showers haircuts and so much more. We have also started providing community giveaways to help families in the community that have a need. Our back to school giveaway we service 5700 people and gave away 1500 book bags. Families are able to get brand new clothing shoes hygiene, cleaning supplies, household supplies and so much more. Today we go out three days a week between Berkeley Dorchester and Charleston county and provide showers, haircuts, laundry service and a hot meal to the homeless. This wouldn’t be possible without amazing volunteers and donors who believe in our vision.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Jean’s Angels was founded to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged individuals in the Charleston, South Carolina and its surrounding areas. We are a registered 501(c)(3) organization that works with the homeless, domestic violence victims, gun violence victims, children with terminal illnesses, and any other individual experiencing (or has recently experienced) a traumatic event. Through our mentorship programs, community outreaches, giveaways, and scholarship programs, Jean’s Angels has been proudly serving the Tri-County area since 2015.
Everybody’s situation is different. No individual should ever feel embarrassed or ashamed of, or afraid of being judged for, being the victim of unfortunate circumstances. Life has a way of presenting different types of adversity for different people, and no matter what you or someone close to you may be going through, Jean’s Angels is here to help get you through it. Between our annual trip to Disney or toy giveaways for underprivileged children, scholarship opportunities for any teenager going through any sort of tragic experience, care bags for senior citizens, and hot meals, showers, and clothes for the homeless, Jean’s Angels brings compassion and warmth to the lives of those who need it most.
Jean’s Angels works with children who are experiencing catastrophic life changes, providing them with everything from adult mentors to trips to Disney. We most commonly work with children of gun violence, children of domestic violence, children of drug use, and children with terminal illnesses. We also work with children whose parents have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses, children who have recently become homeless, and children with severe injuries or physical limitations.
At Jean’s Angels, we pride ourselves on serving as a resource to the community and bringing joy, wholesomeness, compassion, and essentials to the life of anyone who needs it.
Homeless individuals, as well as children of poverty, drug situations, gun violence, and domestic violence, do not have the means to fend for themselves, and could always use a helping hand. Children who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses- or whose parents have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses- need nothing more than genuine love, care, and support.
Our team of dedicated professionals sets out to do whatever can be done to provide comfort, joy, and meaning to the lives of any individual who needs it. We believe that every single person on this earth deserves to be shown empathy, and we see it as our goal to make sure that every individual we take care of moves on with a smile on their face, and their feelings of humanity and self-worth restored.
