We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katrina Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katrina, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope my legacy will leave people with the confidence that they too can do what they love for a living. Chasing my first dream of becoming a Hair and Makeup artist led to new interests and now I have multiple businesses in the creative industry.
Katrina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At the ripe age of 17, I decided I wanted to become a Hair and Makeup Artist and at 18 I moved to Hollywood, CA to attend The Makeup Designory. As with many other self employed fields, to get your business off of the ground you need to hustle. Say yes to every job that comes your way and another will come after that. Over a decade later, my interest in photography from a Hair and Makeup standpoint then put me behind the lens. I also photograph my clients for their single/album cover artwork, social media pages and I even had my first Billboard last year. With being a creative on multiple sides of the photo/film business my love for decorating spaces then expanded. I created a 70’s themed photo/video shoot rental space found on Peerspace and Avvay. That same rental space can now officially be rented for over night stays, you can book it on Airbnb as well as Vrbo under The Faded Daze Stay-Cave. It has welcomed dozens of Nashville Artists for their music videos and album covers. Our current CMA Female Vocalist of the year Lainey Wilson has shot many videos in the Faded Daze Cave as well as Sony Music Artist Nate Smith who shot his Music Video for his Billboard charting song “Whiskey On You” is in the cave.
I think I am set apart from others in the sense that I am a one woman show. If you book me for a photoshoot not only will you have your Hair and Makeup professionally done, I supply the unique space for the shoot as well as take the images.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Truly the most rewarding part of being a creative is knowing you were a part of helping other people’s visions come to life. Wether I am helping give someone confidence after perfecting their hair and makeup or setting the scene for for their dream photo/video shoot, it is such a joy to see a client happy with their project’s outcome.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is and has always been by word of mouth. I have been in this business for over 12 years and have built all of my businesses by word of mouth and keeping good relationships with my clients. I have yet to succumb to the new world of social media and I can proudly say I get zero clientele from having social media presence and my businesses are still thriving.
