We were lucky to catch up with Katrice Feild recently and have shared our conversation below.
Katrice, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe strong ethics and learning from mistakes makes one successful. As a law student, I learned that the practice of law is one of the highest regarded professions and that candor, honesty and fairness speaks greatly to one’s character in dealings with clients, opposing counsel, judges and other legal professionals. Also, understanding that everyone’s role on a case or transaction is important – from the student intern, paralegal to associate or partner. The relationship between my law partner and I is the best example of what I have in being successful. When I was sworn in to the practice of law, I met my current law partner later that year and was offered a position with him soon thereafter. That was almost 13 years ago today and he has exhibited much of what I consider to be a successful attorney in training me on the practice of law, as well as management of the firm on various matters such as HR, policies and structure. My parents also showed me growing up what it takes to be successful by allowing me to shadow them at their office and promoting the importance of an education and determination and perseverance when facing obstacles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a native Memphian and graduate of Vanderbilt University and Florida A&M University College of Law. While I originally had hopes of becoming a pediatric cardiologist, I realized science and math were not my strongest subjects. I met my former spouse while attending Vanderbilt, and he encouraged law school. It turned out to be a positive move and now I am partner of my own law firm, Turner Feild, PLLC which is based in Memphis, TN. I am most proud in that my law firm is a boutique firm where we can provide personalized attention to each client’s case. We specialize in personal injury, real estate, business and contracts, litigation, estate planning and probate, trademark, bankruptcy and elder care. We want our clients to know that their case matters and is top priority. Also, my greatest accomplishment is raising my beautiful daughter, Karmin Danae, and being named to the 2023 Memphis Best of Bar.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn is being overly nice. Exhibiting professionalism is one thing, but I had to really understand that being firm is a must at times as well. Otherwise, one may be taken advantage of. As a baby attorney, you want to take on every case, and most of the time it happens on a pro bono basis. You then realize you have not collected fees and that’s a problem. Fortunately our firm has some of the most reasonable fees within our market for which clients are comfortable paying. It took some unwinding and re-evaluating to be able to explain to people how my advice is deserving of compensation. Now, I am able to choose the clients I want to work with and they are completely enthusiastic about retaining my services because of my quality of work.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Referrals from family, friends and existing/former clients are most important for growing your clientele. Reputation goes a long way and quality of your performance and services rendered help for strong referrals and continued business.
