Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katiuscia Baggio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Katiuscia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
In March 2019, I made the decision to leave my full-time position as the Executive Education Director at CIMBA, a Consortium of 36 American Universities, which is also a business and leadership school. I embarked on the journey of becoming a freelancer. Having worked at CIMBA since 2001, I had accumulated invaluable experience, knowledge, and fostered strong relationships with individuals from all around the world. Although leaving such a fulfilling role was not an easy choice, I felt a deep calling to explore my potential as an entrepreneur and establish my own business.
One of the primary motivations behind my decision was the desire to create an online education platform that could reach a wider audience and provide scalable learning opportunities. After years of creating and delivering in-person training, I was captivated by the idea of developing digital self-paced programs. Consequently, one of my initial steps after becoming a freelancer was to acquire the necessary skills in developing and delivering online courses. This led me to launch my own online school, “I&S,” and publish my first book, “Improvise and Succeed,” on Amazon in 2020. These achievements were long-held aspirations, and witnessing them come to fruition brought me tremendous joy.
Over the past few years, my primary focus has been on creating hybrid programs that integrate self-study through my online school with live individual coaching and training support. Additionally, I introduced a group coaching program called “Create Your Future,” which seamlessly blends live individual and group coaching sessions with a comprehensive digital curriculum. This approach has enabled me to work closely with executives from different part of the world, offering them the benefits of self-paced learning, personalized guidance, and group support.
As a freelancer, I have wholeheartedly embraced the flexibility of working from home while occasionally traveling to companies or abroad for training and coaching engagements. Conducting my practice in both Italian and English has allowed me to maintain an international presence, which is something I genuinely relish. While I deeply appreciate the freedom and autonomy that comes with running my own practice, there are moments when I experience a sense of solitude and yearn for the presence of a team. However, I know I can collaborate with other professionals by forming remote or virtual teams for specific projects, enabling me to harness the expertise of others whenever necessary.
Reflecting on my journey, if I could go back and make changes based on my current knowledge, I would not change much of what I did. I believe every step I took, especially the mistakes, were precious learning opportunities. I know that building virtual teams could have been a strategic way to build and scale my business. On the other hand, I hold my independence in high regard, and until now, I have been content working solo, knowing that I can always reach out my network of coaches, trainers and consultants.
A valuable lesson I learned from past mistakes is the importance of prioritizing and organizing my time effectively. Looking back, I realize that I could have approached things differently by giving more attention to managing my time, striking a balance between focused work and engaging in activities I enjoy, such as relaxation and hiking in nature. In the initial stages of my freelance career, I was consumed by an incessant drive to “do,” but now I understand the significance of rest and engaging in activities that bring me fulfillment.
For young professionals contemplating the prospect of starting their own business, my advice would be to diligently evaluate their passions, strengths, skills, and the demand within the market. Identify what truly ignites your enthusiasm and wholeheartedly pursue it, regardless of any obstacles that may arise. Embrace a global mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, recognizing that entrepreneurship is a journey brimming with challenges and opportunities. Seek out mentors and establish an international network of like-minded individuals who can provide guidance and support. Lastly, do not shy away from taking calculated risks and learning from both triumphs and failures. Remember, embarking on your own business necessitates resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. As I also wrote toward the end of my book, “Improvise and Succeed,” above all, ensure that you find fun and fulfillment throughout the entire process.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an experienced professional in the fields of executive education, leadership development, and coaching. I hold a degree in Educational Sciences with a focus on adult learning in organizations, which has equipped me with a deep understanding of effective learning methodologies and strategies tailored to adult learners in professional environments. Additionally, I have a Master of Business Administration (MBA), which has provided me with a solid foundation in business principles and practices.
After completing my MBA at the University of Kansas, in partnership with CIMBA, the school where I was working offered me another invaluable opportunity: the chance to pursue further studies and become a certified coach. Recognizing the immense value of coaching in personal and professional development, I was eager to expand my skill set and offer even more comprehensive support to CIMBA clients. By investing in advanced neuroscience and brain-based coaching training, I gained a deeper understanding of effective coaching methodologies and techniques, enabling me to guide individuals toward their goals with greater insight and expertise. This additional training has enriched my ability to provide personalized guidance and foster transformative growth in those I worked with by integrating the principles of coaching into my work.
My journey began in 2001 when I joined CIMBA, a Consortium of 36 American Universities, as an enthusiastic member of the team. Over the years, I dedicated myself to the organization’s mission and worked diligently to contribute to its growth and success. Recognizing my dedication, I was honored to be promoted to the role of Executive Education Director a few years later. This pivotal promotion allowed me to take on greater responsibilities and make a significant impact on the development and delivery of executive education programs. It was during this time that I honed my skills, built invaluable connections, and gained a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by professionals seeking to enhance their leadership capabilities. My experience as the Executive Education Director at CIMBA laid a strong foundation for my subsequent ventures and inspired me to pursue my passion for helping individuals unlock their potential through education and coaching.
In 2017, my extensive knowledge and experience in coaching presented me with another remarkable opportunity at CIMBA: the chance to co-create an ICF-accredited coaching program and help train future coaches. This was an exciting endeavor that allowed me to combine my expertise in coaching with my passion for education. Collaborating with a CIMBA team of dedicated professionals, we developed a comprehensive program that met the rigorous standards set by the International Coach Federation (ICF). Through this program, we empowered individuals who were eager to embark on their own coaching journeys, equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and ethical framework to excel in the field.
Building upon the success of the program, I also had the privilege of co-creating and teaching the same program in Italian in 2019. This expansion allowed me to reach a broader audience and provide aspiring coaches in Italy with the same high-quality training and accreditation opportunities. It was a rewarding experience to facilitate the growth and professional development of coaches, both in English and Italian, knowing that they would go on to positively impact the lives of their clients.
In March 2019, I made a pivotal decision to leave my full-time position and embark on the path of being a freelancer. This decision was driven by a deep calling to explore my potential as an entrepreneur and establish my own business. I was motivated by the desire to create an online education platform that could reach a wider audience and provide scalable learning opportunities.
As a freelancer, I have successfully built my own online school called “I&S” and published my first book, “Improvise and Succeed,” in 2020.
The primary focus of my work has been on creating hybrid programs that combine self-study through my online school with live individual coaching and training support. This approach allows me to offer executives and professionals from around the world the benefits of self-paced learning, personalized guidance, and group support.
One of the key problems I solve for my clients is providing them with valuable knowledge and skills that enhance their leadership capabilities, entrepreneurial mindset, and overall professional growth. Through my programs and services, I help individuals develop the necessary mindset, strategies, and practical tools to navigate the challenges of today’s fast-paced, ever-changing business landscape.
What sets me apart from others in my industry is my unique combination of experience, expertise, and a global perspective. With over two decades of experience in executive education and leadership development, coupled with my educational background in adult learning, business, and coaching, I bring a comprehensive skill set to my work. This enables me to create tailored learning experiences that address the specific needs of my clients.
Witnessing their growth, transformation, and success brings me immense joy and fulfillment. I strive to create an environment that fosters continuous learning, growth, and personal development.
I love to help individuals unlock their full potential, overcome challenges, and achieve greater fulfillment in their professional and personal lives.
In summary, I am an executive education and leadership development professional with a background in educational sciences, an MBA, and training in coaching, I offer a unique blend of expertise in people development, business, and coaching. By combining my knowledge of adult learning, business, and coaching, I offer a holistic approach to people development. Through my online school, coaching programs, and published works, I provide individuals with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to succeed in their professional lives. My work is driven by a passion for continuous learning, adaptability, and helping others thrive in today’s dynamic business environment. Improvisation skills serve as a fundamental cornerstone in all of my programs. By incorporating the principles of improvisation, I empower individuals to cultivate adaptability, creative thinking, and effective decision-making in dynamic and uncertain environments. The ability to think on one’s feet, embrace spontaneity, and navigate unforeseen challenges is not only essential in the realm of performing arts but also in the realm of personal and professional development. Integrating improvisation skills into my programs allows participants to enhance their agility, foster innovative problem-solving, and build resilience. These skills are invaluable assets that enable individuals to thrive and succeed in today’s ever-evolving world.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is a genuine passion for people development, an unwavering enthusiasm and energy when interacting with others, and the deep sense of purpose I have for my work. I believe that passion is contagious, and when I engage with individuals, they can sense and resonate with my genuine excitement and dedication. This enthusiasm becomes a catalyst for their own motivation and drive.
I take great joy in witnessing the energy of others rise as we embark on their developmental journey together. I am genuinely invested in their success and growth, and this care and commitment are evident in my interactions and the support I provide. Through my coaching and training programs, I encourage individuals to take action towards their goals, guiding them along the way and empowering them to make meaningful progress.
Furthermore, I place a strong emphasis on self-reflection, encouraging individuals to introspect and gain insights from their learning and coaching experiences. This introspection fosters self-awareness, deepens their understanding, and enables them to make positive changes in their lives.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I have had to unlearn, and one that is still a work in progress, is the need to be perfect and the reluctance to allow mistakes to happen. It has been a transformative journey for me to realize that showing vulnerability to my clients is essential in building connections and demonstrating the principles I advocate for, such as “It is not about perfection, it is about progression.” This realization is at the core of my book, “Improvise and Succeed.”
However, I must admit that I still face an internal struggle and resistance when it comes to accepting mistakes and embracing imperfection. It is an ongoing process of self-observation and self-reflection that has allowed me to take important steps forward. I recognize that it may be an ongoing challenge, but what matters is that my desire for perfection will not hinder me from seizing the opportunities that I can create and that life presents to me.
By acknowledging my own journey and being open about my own growth and learning, I am better able to connect with my clients on a deeper level. This authenticity allows them to see that I practice what I preach and that together we can embrace imperfections, learn from mistakes, and continue progressing towards our goals. It is through this ongoing process of personal growth that I am able to support and inspire others on their own journeys of self-discovery and development.
