We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katin Pesarillo . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katin below.
Katin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
When I first started photography, I had no intentions of it being my job and career. But, I love what I do and the people I am able to meet through photography is what keeps me wanting more out of it. When I first started using a camera in highschool, I never took any classes or anything like that. I would always watch youtube videos and then I would call up one of my friends to shoot. The biggest thing in my opinion that I could have done more, was to shoot more. Learning and reading about photography is cool and very knowledgable but you also have to go out there and actually do it. Putting yourself in situations that demand your creativity and makes you think outside of the box makes you a better photographer. As a photographer who works with people 24/7, you need to have great communication skills in order to makes your peers feel comfortable with you. I am a communications major at the University of San Diego, and the classes I have taken has prepared me to be comfortable when talking to anyone.
Katin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I am Katin Pesarillo. I am a lifestyle photographer based out of San Diego. I have been shooting photos for 5 years. I first picked up a camera in highschool, shooting skating and surfing photos of my friends. As the years went on, I soon transitioned into taking portraits because I loved capturing the raw moments and emotions from my friends and others around me. I think something that sets me apart from other photographers in San Diego or photographers in general, is my ability to effortlessly capture raw moments wherever I go and with whomever I am with.
How did you build your audience on social media?
One of my main social media apps that I use on the daily is Instagram. One thing I can tell you is, it is VERY hard as a photographer to gain recognition and a strong audience because the photography and modeling world is soo saturated. There is soo much competition. But, don’t let that stop you from posting what you like. The one thing that built my following from the ground up was consistency and expanding my network. Bering able to always have content to share is crucial and networking with people outside your general location is key to growing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the main rewarding aspects of what I do is seeing the stoke on peoples faces when I show them their photos. When others are happy about the photos, it makes me happy.
