We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katie Wrigley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katie below.
Katie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
When I was disabled in 2018, it forced me to take a hard look at my life and my choices that led me to where I was. Without being forced into stillness, I’m not sure how much longer it would have taken me to finally deal with everything I was running from…and knowing me, I doubt I would have ever dealt with it! Starting to do the deeper work of healing, and facing what was causing my body pain and anxiety was the best step I took for myself, and it eventually led me to Cognomovement and what I do today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I know what it’s like to live with unanswered trauma running through your body. I know what it’s like to have an overactive nervous system as a result of experiencing trauma and not allowing the body and mind to heal. Until my early 40s, I ran from a trauma I endured as a little girl, and tried everything I could think of to escape it…including numbing with drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, a high pressured career and high risk activities…until I wound up disabled. At that point, the only viable choice was to start to take a look at myself and my life’s choices, embark on a deeper healing journey and start to change how I was doing things. I tried numerous modalities on my journey to help with pain and stress, with varying levels of impact. This journey ultimately led me to Cognomovement, which I fully embraced both personally and professionally. Now I help first responders and others with overactive nervous systems to sleep better, feel better and perform better and allow them to live a higher quality of life.
Cognomovement is a cognitive movement exercise that engages the mind/body connection. It stacks principles from several modalities together like EMDR, EFT, Qi-Gong, Sedona method, NLP, plus it has its own unique elements that make it incredibly effective. Cognomovement speaks directly to the neurology, and the 90% of our brain that is subconscious, allowing access to emotions and memories linked to past events and trauma. Through a series of body movements and eye movements, it down-regulates the nervous system, activates all 3 learning centers (auditory, visual and kinesthetic) as well as activating and harmonizing the two hemispheres of the brain, allowing the body to release the trauma and negative emotions. Changes tend to be pretty rapid and long lasting as a result of how the system works.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Taking the time to cultivate relationships and build trust. Most of my clients come from third party referrals, and people who have had a positive experience working with me. Cognomovement is a relatively new modality, and it’s incredibly effective…yet when people see the ball that’s involved with it, they are immediately skeptical. I was too! Then it worked…and it continued to work. Taking time to gather testimonials, to share stories of success, and give people a chance to try it for themselves has been the biggest factor in my success so far.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
“You need to hire a coach to figure it out.” When I was first introduced to coaching, I was working with a life coach to teach me how to make better decisions for myself and to understand why I got in my way in the ways I did (and still do sometimes!). From the life coach, I worked with a wellness coach who helped me a lot with mindset around pain and healing. A vocal coach took my voice from monotone and nasal to what I’ve been told is a very soothing and engaging tone. Then the thought was “If I need to learn something, I’ll hire a coach!”
While it’s true that we need to learn a lot of the strategies and techniques to make it as a business owner, and coaching is one of the best ways you can do that, there is always someone waiting to tell you that you need something more, and their method is how you will succeed. There is an element of truth to that, but don’t let someone else’s opinion steer your buying decisions! I’ve learned a ton from the courses I’ve taken, but did I “need” all of them? Not at all. Some were 100% fear based decisions that were a waste of financial resources. Some were duplicates of each other.
Now when I make buying decisions for furthering myself as an entrepreneur, I’m looking more at the big picture and logical next steps. What does the support and accountability look like? What is the promise, if any? What is the guarantee? Is this something I can do on my own with my own level of accountability or does it take skills I haven’t learned yet?
I use this logic within my own clients too…and scale my offers per what they need, to make sure I am always providing the value they need!
