We recently connected with Katie Valtchev and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business in 2021 after quitting my corporate job during the pandemic. Much like the rest of the world, I was in a contemplative place reflecting on what’s important to me and how I could live in better alignment with my values. I was ultimately deciding how I wanted to spend my time and who was going to be in charge of the way I spend my time.
Even though I have my moments where I wish I’d been doing this all along, I’m a big believer that I’m right where I’m supposed to be at any given time. I wouldn’t have been ready to do all of this right after I graduated college or even during my sales career before this one.
Even if we’re currently in a place that doesn’t feel right for us, it’s a necessary part of getting us where we need to be. How do we know where we’re meant to be if we don’t test out the wrong places first? That’s something that’s given me peace lately in moments where I’m not sure if I’m making the right choice.
If I could change anything about my experience, I’d hire a branding and website designer sooner. I grew my business for a while by only using my LinkedIn profile as my interim portfolio, and I was hard on myself for not having my own website. Sometimes I wish I’d done that right from the start, but again I know that the timing worked out the way it was supposed to.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m the proud freelancer behind KLV Copywriting, and I specialize in social media marketing, content marketing, and copywriting with a human touch. When clients tell me that they’re overwhelmed by social media, hate writing, or don’t know what to say on their website, I get excited because I know I can help them bring their vision to life. I’m proud of the fact that my work helps other people put a spotlight on the important work that they do.
In a world where everyone’s so excited about publishing as much content as possible by using AI without concern for the quality of the end product, my focus is always on bringing that human element to whatever I’m writing.
My background in sales taught me the value of an effective email, and my experiences in college helped me feel prepared to launch my freelance career. I majored in public relations, which meant I was practicing different types of writing in my classes and understood the importance of storytelling early on. I also had several internships and experiences outside the classroom where the work I was doing was actually being used in the real world. It’s also where I met my close friend and fellow freelancer who designed my beautiful branding and website you see today!
As an outlet for my own creative energy, I also have a Substack newsletter where I talk about all things books and reading. I needed a space where I could write purely for myself without outside instruction. When someone tells me they loved one of my recommendations or connected with something I wrote, it lights me up. I’ve always loved writing, even from a young age, so I appreciate that I’m now doing it on my own terms. I look back at the books I “published” in elementary school, and it feels like I’m honoring that same creative spirit today every time I publish something I’ve written purely for myself.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Just because things have always been done a certain way doesn’t mean that’s the way I have to do them. In my previous corporate life, I was trying so hard to fit myself into the 9-5 mold. I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me, but I was powering through because I felt like it was what I was supposed to be doing.
We can carve out our own spaces where we feel grounded, fulfilled, and excited by our work every day. This is what I remind myself during those unglamorous freelancing moments that everyone doesn’t always see.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Connecting with people has been a big focus for me this year. I love working from home for so many reasons, but it does mean that you have to work harder to connect with other people during your workday.
Whether it’s in person over a meal or virtually on a video call, I’ve been prioritizing building connections. I love hearing what other people are working on and always feel inspired afterward. My recent collaborations have organically sprouted from these interactions. A mentor from college, a referral from a friend, a fellow founder in a mastermind group. These kinds of partnerships are even more rewarding because you get to work with people you already enjoy spending time with.
I’m a big believer in that the energy you put out into the world will come back to you. As long as you’re being true to yourself and genuine in your interactions, you’ll receive that same energy back in your life and your business.
