Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Thompson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
As a creative, I know I also need to be a lifelong learner. I came into the audiobook industry with a handful of skills that initially helped me get my feet off the ground. I have over 15 years of experience in theater and film, a Master’s degree in journalism and media, and have been podcasting since 2018. I was no stranger to performing and audio production. However, I quickly realized I still needed to learn a wealth of knowledge to be successful as a narrator. Luckily, research is one of my favorite pastimes, especially when it has to do with something that fascinates me. I have spent countless hours researching, learning, asking questions, watching and learning from those I admire, and generally doing my best to accrue as much knowledge as possible. Every experience, whether success or challenge, is an opportunity to expand my horizons and glean fresh perspectives.
Katie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve had a lifelong love affair with literature and storytelling. From a young age, books became my sanctuary. After pursuing a degree in theater and a Master’s degree in journalism, I started my own marketing company and ran that full time until I had my daughter in 2021.
Being a new mom turned my world upside down in the most incredible way. I loved being able to spend all my time with my little girl but becoming a mom meant some major changes for me, especially when it came to pursuing my passion for performing.
However, amidst the chaos of motherhood, I stumbled upon a whole new world that completely mesmerized me. On long walks with my daughter, I escaped into the realm of audiobooks. I realized the incredible power of narration and the way it could truly bring books to life in such a unique way.
Armed with the skills I gained during my journalism, theater, and podcasting days, I decided to take a leap of faith. I transformed a cozy corner of my home into a recording studio.
I feel so incredibly blessed to have gotten the opportunity to work with some amazing authors and narrators. I’ve also been so pleasantly surprised to have found such a great online community of readers, authors and narrators.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Before I started narrating, I didn’t know much about the online book community. Reading, for me, had always been a solitary experience. My first business, Modern Darling Media, is a marketing and social media company, so I have had some experience in content creation. However, it’s a whole different ball game doing it for yourself. I started my TikTok and Instagram accounts to share about my audiobook releases, which I still do. However, I have branched out in the last year and focused more on behind-the-scenes content and personal stories, thoughts, and anecdotes. I even share recommendations for my favorite audiobooks that I’m currently listening to. The more authentic and honest you are, the more people respond to you. People are on social media to forge connections, so don’t be afraid to show your face and personality and let people get to know the person behind the work.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I mostly narrate in the romance genre and adore bringing these love stories to life. First and foremost, there’s the sheer joy of immersing myself in stories filled with love, passion, and all the swoon-worthy moments that make your heart skip a beat. The beauty of narrating romance lies in the endless array of characters and their unique journeys. I get to explore their quirks, vulnerabilities, and desires, and breathe life into their experiences. It’s an incredible privilege to be the conduit for their emotions, to help listeners connect with them on a deeper level. The connection I forge with listeners is another aspect that fills my heart with joy. Romance is a genre that touches people’s lives in profound ways, bringing up memories, hopes, and dreams. Through my narration, I have the opportunity to be a companion, a confidant, and a source of comfort for those who listen. Knowing that I can bring a smile to someone’s face or provide solace during a challenging time is incredibly rewarding.
