Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Statema. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I started photography as a hobby, and after my son was born and wanting a more flexible work schedule, I decided to take photography more seriously and see where it could take me. I spent countless hours teaching myself everything I could learn and shooting as much as I could. Deciding to take my business on full time is the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. The first few months were challenging, the uncertainties of entrepreneurship were definitely at the forefront of my mind, but gradually, the decision proved to be the right one. Within the first few months of me starting to take on sessions the number of clients and support I was receiving was overwhelming. My business grew exponentially, and I found a sense of freedom and fulfillment that I never experienced before. That risk taught me the importance of trusting myself, embracing discomfort, and being willing to take bold steps toward the life I truly wanted to live.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Katie, and I’m a photographer. My journey began with a camera in a random high school photography class, and I’ve loved it ever since. Over time it has grown into a career, allowing me to explore a wide range of photography, from portraiture and events to sports. What I love most about photography is its ability to freeze a fleeting moment. Whether it’s the quiet joy in a couple’s eyes during a maternity session, the raw emotion of a milestone event, or the thrill of a game winning shot. Every project I take on is an opportunity to collaborate, create, and capture something uniquely beautiful.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part of being a creative is being able to take someones ideas and bring it to life for them.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for my business is referrals from past clients. I really try to make everyone’s experience with me like they are taking photos with their best friend. I just want everyone to be comfortable and have fun when shooting with me.
