We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katie Simpson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katie below.
Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’m Katie, and I believe we’re strangers, but not really. I want to get close to the source, the magic that connects us as individuals and turns us into dreamers. I have been making music my whole life, and have been putting it out for three years. Music makes us cry, laugh, and changes the way we think and connect with others. I am currently creating my third album, “strangers, but not really” in an attempt to reinvent the way I see the world. Any person at the grocery store, park, or concert, can turn into a friend, or create a brief moment of connection. Making this album has opened my mind to the possibilities that appear when you listen to the world around you and put in effort to connecting with it.
By hearing the stories on this album, I hope the listener connects, and then goes out into the world with a new perspective.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been singing and making music in choirs my whole life. When I finished high school, I realized I could never be fulfilled in a “normal job”. I turned to music, and started writing and producing. I write, produce, and perform all of my music. Now that I am in college, I am connecting with other writers, producers, and artists. We push each other to make the best, most authentic music possible, and proudly support each other.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The voice in your head is not always kind or truthful. I made an album called “story I tell myself” in an attempt to unpack what I tell myself and how I can optimize this. During this time, I learned about mindfulness, which to me is noticing without judging. I started to notice themes in what I was telling myself. I write about these various judgements in my album. Reader, I pose this question to you: “How much better off would you be if you treated yourself like a friend?”
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Art is incredibly valuable. Creating art from a young age improves problem solving skills, teamwork, and creativity. The more art we have, the better off society is. If you are a business owner, hire an painter to make a mural on the wall of your business, or do a live music night every friday. Music, to quote a professor, is a “t-shirts and tickets business”. Go to artists’ shows and buy their merch. Streaming does not make any money.
