Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katie Silcox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Katie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I created The Shakti School as a portal in feminine energy for women, based on two principles: 1. Women have been discounted from their sources of traditional women’s wisdom in regard to their health, wellness and spirituality and 2. While we need education, we also need a space where we can access the quiet voice behind the thinking mind that holds wisdom, intuition and true knowledge. Our mission is to support women in honoring their own spiritual and health sovereignty as well as empowering and educating them in the world’s global health traditions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have never considered what I do a business, but more of a calling. I got into this industry because of my own experience of suffering. As a young woman I struggled with my own emotions and near-debilitating anxiety. Through the practices that we offer at the Shakti School, which are largely based in Ayurvedic and Yogic medicine as well as modern biohacking neuroscience and therapeutic techniques, I was able to (overtime and slowly) overcome my own personal challenges. Because of this I feel incredibly inspired and passionate about sharing these methods with other people.
I am most proud of the incredible platform that we’ve created that attracts women from all over the world from a diverse background set. We have gathered over 20 different teachers and leaders in the realm of Ayurveda and functional medicine to support this health coaching platform.
The Shakti School’s mission is to uplift and nurture feminine-form movement and healing arts, and the rise of women stepping into their spiritual and creative authority. This is important to us because when women truly step into their power, they use that power for the greater good. We are a 100% women-owned and operated small-business offering a creative, spiritually-inclined space for women to heal. We believe in the interconnection of personal and collective evolution at all levels: spiritually, intellectually, sexually and emotionally.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
All of the best things that have come to me in my business, and in my life for that matter, have come by being in the flow of my life and deeply listening. Trust me, you are gonna need a lot of hustle if you want to run and start a business, but the ideas have always come to me in almost magical ways by listening to my clients.
I wrote a book about Ayurvedic medicine and students and readers began to write me asking for a coaching certification platform in Ayurveda. I had never thought of doing this and yet the more I got those requests, the more I began to realize that the most important thing about running a business is to listen to what your clients are saying. What do they want? What pain point are you able to ameliorate? How are you able to make people feel that they belong?
And you really can’t fake this. It has to be coming from a genuine authentic place of wanting to connect and wanting to serve.
One of my business mentors taught me that we should not measure our success only in terms of financials, but in terms of impact that we are having on other people in the world. So, the best way we have garnered clients and success is to provide incredible, affordable value and to deeply listen to their pain, joy and desires.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Im a big fan of boostrapping. I started 15 years ago as a yoga teacher in San Francisco who could barely pay her rent. Now we run a company with over 20+ teachers and have students from every country in the world passionate about learning Ayurveda.
For me, it has worked out to move slow and not take any investments from outside sources, so as to keep my company. I would fund the next growth by the profits made the year before, and that slow growth has kept us small in some ways but also sustainable.
