We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katie Schubert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I can think of a few word to highlight my path towards success: grit, perseverance, passion, confidence, creativity, and optimism. I have failed more times than most, I have been told “no” too many times to count. I kept going and kept trying. I believed in myself and my mission and found a way around the “no’s”.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Katie Schubert. I am a mental health therapist and specialize in sex therapy. I own Cypress Wellness Center, a large mental health group practice in St. Petersburg, FL. I thoroughly enjoyed school and received three bachelors degrees, two masters degrees, and a PhD. I also completed a year of postgraduate studies in sex therapy. I am a registered yoga teacher and a qualified supervisor to other mental health professionals.
After I began practicing mental health, I noticed a lack of services offered to those who didn’t have insurance and those who couldn’t afford the high fees of most therapists. I opened Cypress Wellness Center to offer such services. We are a teaching institution and host students completing their masters degree in mental health counseling as well as post graduate interns. We are able to offer free services to our community as well as sliding scale fees. We also accept insurance.
We recently opened our Cypress Wellness Center yoga studio, which will host therapeutic yoga classes. True to our mission, these classes will be available for free for those who need it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was diagnosed with ADHD early in life (after nearly failing the 4th grade and being held back!). Since then, most of my teachers never paid me much mind. I even had one high school teacher tell me college wasn’t for me. I persevered, and studied my butt off, and eventually made it through 14 years of college!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that ADHD is a disability. Coming from a mental health professional, this may sound strange. However, as soon as I learned that ADHD set me apart from others and provided me with a unique set of badass strengths, I was so much more successful in life. My ability to think outside the box, my ability to hyperfocus on what I want and get creative about making it happen, is one of the largest reasons I’m successful.
